Monday Morning Box Office Report: Cowboys and Smurfs in Dead Heat

Well it doesn’t happen too often, but the box office showdown between Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs ended in a draw… at least until the final numbers come in. Based on weekend estimates, both movies earned $36.2 million, which is a little better than expected for The Smurfs, and a little worse than expected for Cowboys & Aliens. It seems safe to assume that The Smurfs will have more staying power in the long run, and overall Cowboys & Aliens is falling far short of earning back its immense $163 million budget. Captain America: The First Avenger fell 62% in its second weekend to claim the #3 spot, and is pretty close to matching the same pace that Thor set back in May. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 earned another $21.9 million and has officially crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, meanwhile Crazy, Stupid, Love. was forced to settle for a fifth place debut. Next weekend Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Change-Up enter the fray.
