New to Theatres This Weekend: Cowboys & Aliens, Crazy Stupid Love, The Smurfs

It’s a surprisingly crowded summer weekend at the box office with three major releases and quite a few interesting movies playing in select theatres as well. Jon Favreau’s genre mash-up Cowboys & Aliens goes up against the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and The Smurfs starring Neil Patrick Harris. The Smurfs may be sitting at 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it still has the potential to be a huge money maker for Sony, while Cowboys & Aliens could just as easily flounder. At this point I’d say it’s anyone’s game. In limited release, we also have another alien invasion flick in Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block, Kevin MacDonald and Ridley Scott’s crowdsourced documentary Life in a Day, and The Devil’s Double starring Dominic Cooper, plus Miranda July’s second film The Future and Steve James’ The Interrupters, both playing on a single screen each.
