Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Trailer

In spite of its flaws, I have to admit that I was a fan of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. I thought Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law made for an entertaining and dynamic pair, and although the movie may have been a little more loud and brash than your usual Sherlock Holmes adaptation, many of the action set pieces were a welcome addition. I have been holding on to the hope that Guy Ritchie’s upcoming sequel would maintain the chemistry between Holmes and Watson while offering us a little more in the way of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery — not to mention a showdown with Professor Moriarty.

Well the first trailer for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows has just hit the web, and I have to say, I’m not that impressed. They’ve definitely amped up the action with plenty of machine guns and explosions, but by doing so they are losing any association with the classic character that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created. It’s cool to see Noomi Rapace make her North American debut here, but overall, I’m not feeling it… even the comedy seems to fall flat. Perhaps I’ve just been spoiled by the BBC’s Sherlock in the time since the release of the first film? Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hits theatres on December 16th; check out the trailer in HD over at Apple.com or watch an embedded version after the jump.

I also think the trailer fell a bit flat , but its only because Steven moffat is freaking genius and Guy ritchie can only hope to be him. The BBC’s sherlock is the best representation of a moderm day sherlock holmes. I hope the movis is better than the trailer suggests .

Looks like utter shit to me.

I kinda liked parts of the first one like you Sean, but I don’t see this being anything more than a re-tread at best, and it looks more like the worst.

And I agree that the Sherlock series was awesome. The Robert Downey Jr. portrayal of the character seems pretty meaningless.

Doesn’t look interesting. I’m waiting for season 2 of BBC’s Sherlock.

But this is an absolute replica of the? first film’s trailer (whether it it supposed to be that way or not isn’t really that relevant), even the jokes are the same! Just compare it to the trailer of the original film, even the set pieces feel the same!

And did Watson’s chick colour her hair? Didn’t know that was usual in Victorian era…..oh waaiiiiiiit…this is Hollywood…aaaah, stupid me.

Yes, the bbc-series rocks. But I enjoyed the first one, especially on the second viewing. This looks slightly underwhelming, but I liked the joke at the end and I’m sure Downey will bring oodles of charisma like he always does.

I loved the BBC series as much as everyone else but I don’t see why we can’t also have a fun popcorn movie with the character as well. Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories aren’t exactly stuffy works of high art – they veer into some pretty pulp territory – and I like that the first movie and this one seem to play up those funner and looser elements that most of the other adaptations seem to miss.

Plus, it has Stephen Fry as Mycroft, which should be great.

Personally I think it’s a pretty rousing trailer for a popcorn flick. They might be over using the speed ramping but otherwise it looks good. And Guest, this isn’t Watson’s girlfriend, this is a new character, if you are talking about the dark haired tarot card woman.

Hmm… If this movie had a title with the word explosion in it, I probably would agree that this trailer is good, but for something called Sherlock Holmes, there should be certain standards… At least I can’t help but hope for certain standards for all the interpretations of things I love, someday… ^^
