Kurt Wimmer Tapped for Point Break Remake?

Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break is a cult classic action flick that has enjoyed a solid shelf life over the years. It was brought back into the spotlight in 2007 by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Hot Fuzz, and shortly after that we started hearing rumours about a possible sequel that might take place in Indonesia. At the time, the original film’s writer Peter Iliff was going to write and direct, but this was all a couple of years before Patrick Swayze lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. His death ultimately eliminated any possibility of a sequel, but now it seems that Point Break may be staging a comeback in a whole new way. Yep, that’s right… as a remake.
The good folks over at Twitch recently caught wind of a Point Break remake being set up over at RGM Entertainment, the same production company that was looking to do a sequel. According to their source, there is no cast or director attached as of yet, but a script has already been written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Salt). Wimmer also recently wrote the Total Recall remake that is currently in production, but it does seem a bit odd that he would be working on this without any sort of official announcement. It should be stressed that this is still just a rumour.
While the original film followed a gang of bank robbers who were into surfing and sky diving, the remake will reportedly focus on surfing and skiing instead. If you ask me, leaving out the sky diving is a huge missed opportunity. The base jumping scenes from Transformers: Dark of the Moon were pretty exhilarating, and if they were going to shoot this in 3-D it could actually add something unique to the remake. What do you think? Are you a fan of Point Break and is this a movie that deserves an update?
