This Week on DVD: Sucker Punch, Season of the Witch, The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition Blu-ray

It’s basically The Lord of the Rings and a bunch of crap this week as more of the year’s lacklustre films desperately attempt to find an audience on DVD and Blu-ray. Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch was rushed to stores with a new R-rated extended cut in an attempt to correct some of the complaints people had about the film in theatres, while Nicolas Cage is once again slumming it in Season of the Witch and Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens try to re-invent Beauty and the Beast for tweens in Beastly. Barney’s Version starring Paul Giamatti also hits stores today along with The Warrior’s Way and a handful of Criterion releases, but with The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Limited Extended Edition on Blu-ray, you’ll probably have more than enough content to keep you occupied until the end of the summer. Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Check out a rundown of the noteworthy releases after the jump.

My friend said he’s probably gonna buy the Sucker Punch extended Blu-ray. I’ll just borrow his copy so I don’t waste my money. I was dissapointed by the movie when I saw it in theatres, but I guess I “enjoyed” it enough to check out the R-rated cut to see if any of the additions make it, you know, coherent and good.

The only new purchase I made this week was one not on the list. Blue Underground’s release of the 1980 Armand Weston horror rarity The Nesting (on Blu-Ray and DVD). If Jay doesn’t pick this up I’ll be surprised.

I highly recommend the Criterion release BLACK MOON. I had seen it on TCM one night three years ago and have sent CC suggestions to release it since. One of the best plotless art films ever with absolutely gorgeous cinematography and setting.
