This Week on DVD: True Grit, Sanctum, Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology

All in all, not a bad batch of DVD and Blu-ray releases for the beginning of June. The must-have title of the week is The Coens’ remake of True Grit starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon which will probably move quite a few units. Other mainstream titles include the Adam Sandler / Jennifer Aniston rom-com Just Go With It and the James Cameron-produced 3D dud Sanctum, while specialty and art house releases include Mike Leigh’s Another Year, John Wells’ divisive The Company Men, and a remake of the Korean thriller The Housemaid. TV addicts will want to catch up with Breaking Bad: Season 3 before the next season premieres, and Superman fans won’t be able to resist Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology on Blu-ray. What will you be picking up this week? Check out the full list of notable releases after the jump.

  • Still stunned that “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut,” included in the new “Anthology” package, even exists. It’s an amazing part of franchise lore, and why it took so long to surface is beyond me.

The “Superman” set forces you to add “Quest for Peace” to your movie collection, but otherwise it’s a great package brimming with fun extras.

Who knew Dustin Hoffman was once mentioned to play both Superman and, later, Lex Luthor? Or that Marlon Brando told director Donner he saw his role as that of a bagel. Yes, it’s true, according to Donner.

I saw True Grit last night and I was very impressed with it. When you look at a western it makes you remember not to take anything for granted. We have all these “modern conveniences” and those of us that were born into this stuff tend not to think about it a lot, but there are many countries and places out there, even now, where they don’t even have indoor plumbing, let alone electricity. It just makes me grateful, although I wish I had even more technology at my disposal. I like the level of control that people have in movies like “Surrogate”. I think that would be nice, except I wish we had that type of ability over our own bodies, not just “Surrogates”.

  • Hi,

True Grit was a nice movie but not the epic adventure I was hoping for. Jeff Bridges should his talent and versatility.
