Jim Carrey Hints at Dumb & Dumber and Bruce Almighty Sequels

There was once a time when Jim Carrey was attempting to transition from goofy comedies to a more serious acting career, and while I am a huge fan of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and to a lesser extent Man on the Moon and The Truman Show), it seems that at this point he is finally starting to realize that dramas are not his forte. While doing interviews for his upcoming movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Carrey hinted that his next project would likely be a return to one of his more successful comedies from the past. In response to a question about his next film, Carrey had this to say:
“We’re talking about maybe returning to some old characters that everyone has been asking about… There’s Bruce Almighty and we’re talking about maybe another Dumb and Dumber.”
We already knew that The Farrelly Brothers had been talking about putting together a true Dumb & Dumber sequel, but this confirms that Carrey is ready and willing to return to the character of Lloyd Christmas. Of course, Jeff Daniels would still have to agree to it, but why wouldn’t he? The Bruce Almighty sequel is a bigger surprise, however, especially considering that the movie already had a sequel in the form of Evan Almighty starring Steve Carrell.
In both cases, these are sequels that once seemed below Carrey, but now he is learning to embrace them instead. It’s true that his career is not as hot as it once was, but perhaps he really does like these characters and wants to give fans what they’ve been asking for. Are you interested in sequels to Dumb and Dumber and Bruce Almighty? Do you think this means Jim Carrey is giving up on more dramatic roles, and if so, is that the right move?
