Fox Animation Planning King Kong Animated Film

From the looks of things, Fox must really think monkeys are the secret to success. Not only do they have Rise of the Planet of the Apes coming out later this summer, but now they are giving the greenlight to a new version of King Kong – this time in animated form. Of course, there have been a few different versions of the classic film made over the years using various methods of portraying the giant ape, with the most recent example being Peter Jackson’s retelling back in 2005. This film will offer a new take on the material, however, as it will be told from Kong’s perspective and will also be set in modern day. Christian Magalhaes and Bob Snow, who recently had a script featured on the Black List called Murder of a Cat, will handle the story duties.
There’s no other information provided on the story or what type of animation the filmmakers will use. Assuming that Fox is aiming for a more “kid-friendly” version of King Kong, I’m not entirely sure how the film will work unless they plan a complete overhaul of the story. After all, everyone knows Kong’s fate and it isn’t a happy ending. How will the romance between Kong and Ann Darrow be handled? Right now, I have some doubts about this project. It’s a classic tale that deserves to be retold every now and then, but this seems like another case of Hollywood branding. What are your thoughts on an animated King Kong?
