Rise of the Planet of the Apes Trailer #2

A second trailer has clawed its way online this week for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fox’s other big blockbuster for this summer, and while I’m still not sure how it will be perceived by the masses, I’m starting to become somewhat intrigued. The story is a reboot / prequel that explains how man’s experiments with genetic engineering created intelligent apes that would eventually rise up against them. From what I understand it is not meant to tie in directly to the existing films nor is it related to Tim Burton’s remake, but it lays the groundwork for a whole new series of Planet of the Apes stories.

The new trailer shows off a lot more of WETA’s special effects work, which is definitely ambitious and impressive. I suspect this will be the major selling point for most people considering that the only big name stars in it are James Franco, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow. What I like is that it seems like more than just a big dumb action movie, and after seeing the documentary Project Nim just last month, this movie actually has an element of believability to it as well. Rise of the Planet of the Apes hits theatres on August 11th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Does look intriguing. And I’ll concede several points to further the plot. BUT…it looks like the movie is taking place in San Francisco/north CA somewhere. Here is my ONE big complaint, there are TONS of chimps in the action shots. I can see a lab having a dozen or so, maybe a nearby zoo having little more. BUT there are almost hundreds or more of chimps in the shots. Is there a large chimp population in CA I’m not aware?

It looks interesting, but really what a silly slogan, “evolution becomes revolution” it’s retarded.

  • Napalm

    Looks ridiculously awesome!

  • Johnnyboy

I completely agree with you there kyri. It would be like having a voice-over in the trailer of There Will Be Blood, and having the trailer-voice guy saying – in the middle of the trailer – ”…and he is visited by the brother from another mother”.

  • Johnnyboy

”Put those apes down!” [lol, did he really say that!?]

”We call it….*dark voice* the cureeeh *dark voice*”

”I want you to stop testing chimps ASAP”.

    ”That chimp’s company property”

‘’You are trying to control things that are not meant to be controlled’’
‘’You have no idea what you are dealing with’’

In this case (represented by the quotes above), ‘’chimp’’ is the filling of what is usually a dangerous experiment, a weapon, an invention and so on and so forth. You change the word ‘’chimp’’ with any of these mentioned examples, and you will have yourself a textbook-illustration of a Hollywood-blockbuster.

@johnnyboy indeed.. The fist trailer was way better.

I also don’t like that jimmy franco guy, all that much.
I am changing his name in case he is googling it, that guy is nuts. :)

Just kidding james. We all going to see your movie.

  • Shannon

I am ridiculously excited for this. I don’t care if they are CGI or not, the chimps look all kinds of creepy.

  • Napalm

Ah yes yes some of the lines seem corny and script writing 101-ish, but I’m willing to look past that only because I think the visuals and setting look amazing.

  • Big Hungry

The CG looks like crap to me… I hope they are working on it more and this is not the final render.

  • Henrik

“Apes Will Rise”… Reminds me of “Titans Will Clash”.

Looks like I, Robot with monkeys instead of robots.

  • “Looks like I, Robot with monkeys instead of robots.”

Best comment I’ve heard all day

(although there is no Will Smith styled wisecracking or excessive product placement in this trailer like there was in I Robot)

  • chewrog

I was sure for a second it was going to go with “evolution…becomes…personal”.

  • At times the chimp CGI is remarkable. Other times … not so much. This doesn’t seem to be a great fit for James Franco. Then again, whenever I see him now my mind goes back to him sleepwalking through the Oscars.

I’ve been pretty down on the whole prequel thing. Just an excuse to bring exhausted franchises back to life. But “X-Men: First Class” surprised me with its intelligence and grit, so I’m hoping “Apes” will pull the same stunt.

The only thing this film is missing is Ricardo Montalban
