New to Theatres This Weekend: X-Men: First Class, Submarine, Beginners

There’s just one major release hitting theatres this weekend, and although it may not have been as heavily hyped as some of the summer’s other comic book movies, it definitely seems to be garnering solid reviews. Did Matthew Vaughn deliver the goods with X-Men: First Class and can it sober up The Hangover Part II? If you’re sick of the X-Men, in select theatres we also have Ewan McGregor starring in Beginners from director Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), Richard Ayoade’s Submarine, and Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme, among others. What will you be checking out this weekend?

I saw the midnight showing of “X-Men: First Class” last night and it was definitely worth the wait. A very smart and sexy comic book movie that was very intelligent but also extremely entertaining.

Definitely on par with X-Men 1 & 2, if not a step or two above those films. The only complaint I would make, and it’s not solely against this film, but just the trend that we are now experiencing with all these prequels and how odd it feels to go see a movie and know generally how it’s going to end or what the general outcome is going to be.

Obviously, I went to see the film and they got my money, so the problem can’t be that serious, yet, but I really wish these companies/individuals, whoever, would start coming up with some fresh new ideas.

Regardless, like I said, the movie was great. There were definitely a handful of nice surprises. There were the usual headaches involved with going to see a movie with this type of appeal ,at the theater, but I knew what I was getting myself in for before I stepped out of the door.

This is why I prefer to just catch a lot of stuff on blu-ray these days.

Even with the headaches, I feel it was worthwhile and I think a lot of people will head out this weekend to see this movie.
