Carrie Remake in the Works, Megan Fox Pursuing Lead Role

Stephen King has had quite a few of his works adapted for the big screen over the years with varying results, but to this day one of the most well-respected adaptations is still the very first one: Brian De Palma’s Carrie. The 1976 film features Sissy Spacek in an iconic and Oscar-nominated performance as an abused teenage girl who lashes out with psionic powers. Of course, as we’ve come to expect with every classic horror film out there, a remake is now imminent. MGM and Screen Gems are reportedly teaming up for a brand new take on the novel, and they have hired Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to write the script. And if you think that sounds like a bad sign, just wait until you hear who is up for the lead role.
According to Movieweb, Megan Fox is a big fan of the original film and is “actively pursuing” the lead role in the remake. The report comes from an inside source close to the actress, and should probably be taken with a grain of salt — especially considering the fact that there’s no evidence that she would even be considered in the first place. Although her performance in Jennifer’s Body could be seen as relevant experience in a similar genre film, if you ask me, that performance is also precisely what disproves her as a decent choice to play Carrie.
Interestingly, Stephen King has commented on the remake over at Entertainment Weekly and has thrown Lindsay Lohan out as an intriguing possibility for the lead role. Although De Palma’s film supposedly differs from the novel somewhat, King actually supports it (unlike Kubrick’s take on The Shining), and there has already been a made-for-TV version of Carrie as well. I think King sums up all of our feelings on this matter when he says, “The real question is why, when the original was so good?” Why indeed.
