The Muppets Trailer Starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams

After making its debut in theatres this weekend attached to prints of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the first trailer for Disney’s new Muppet movie has finally arrived online. Written by and starring Jason Segel, I’ve been looking forward to this for quite some time now, and really hoping that Segel can breathe new life into these classic Jim Henson creations. The thing is, for a movie that should be announcing the triumphant return of a beloved franchise, they’ve made a strange marketing decision that could result in this trailer being completely overlooked.

You see, the whole thing is disguised as a trailer for a movie called Green with Envy, which appears to be a paint-by-numbers romantic comedy starring Segel and Amy Adams. Then suddenly, about halfway through the trailer, the Muppets characters are revealed. While it’s a good idea in theory, I completely tuned out when I saw it the first time this past weekend. Now that they’ve put it up on Apple.com, the trailer itself is still being labeled as Green with Envy. If you ask me, it’s a bit of a mistake. Nonetheless, I’m pretty psyched for this, I just hope it is an improvement on some of the more recent made-for-TV productions like The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz. The Muppets hits theatres on November 23rd; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

  • I wonder if we’ll see his wang in this film, too.

Honestly, I don’t get this muppet thing. I grew up with a tiny bit of sesame street, and even that at times was nerve grating. I don’t hate puppets, I just don’t get what people ever saw in these puppets, let alone find reason to make it big again. I hated the dark crystal, labyrinth, and all the muppet movies I’ve been subjected to through out my childhood. I’v tried watching the muppet movies a few years back, and I can safely say that those movies along with this trailer, for the most part, can go fuck itself.

This trailer looks terrible. Are these actual scenes from the film or are they just for the trailer?

Anyways, I am excited for the film.

Is that Amy Adams to the right of Segel?

  • Goon

To deny the Muppets is to deny all that is right in the world :P

I think the trailer is having its desired effect. More people are talking about this trailer than the new Spielberg movie, and more than Pirates 4. And based on my facebook feed and on twitter, people are quite happy to spread the ‘fake’ trailer playing along with everything.

I don’t know how you can not smile once the muppets show up halfway through the trailer. I was asking my friend what the hell this was and then *wham*…like a ray of light from the heavens.

  • Falsk

Agreed with Justice. Those tricksters–it was a pleasant surprise to see it before Pirates 4… once I realized what it was. :D
