Though you make so very valid points regarding the performances in this film, it seems to me that, ultimately, you just don't "get" what Anderson was aiming for here. Though he makes some questionable decisions concerning possible religious allegory, this is a film about existential dread and the Lovecraftian fear of the incomprehensible unknown, not a typical horror movie like, say, The Crazies. It's a lot closer in tone to Session 9, which I consider one of the best examples of sheer cinematic dread from the past twenty years. Anderson's definitely not a flawless director, but he aims high and tries to bring something different than jump-scares and dimwitted monsters to the horror/suspense genre. That he doesn't quite hit the target is understandable and perhaps even forgivable, since at least he's aiming for something different than the usual Hollywood horror garbage.

When your entire film's cast consists of four actors you simply don't cast Hayden Christensen as one of them. He can barely carry a scene, let alone a movie.

Really enjoy Anderson's work, but this is a big letdown. Although if anything prompts people to see the excellent Transsiberian, I'm all for it!
