Introducing Film Junk’s Newest Writer: Shannon Hood!

Greetings all, I’m Shannon Hood, and I will be joining the writing team here at Film Junk. I’m a gal, so I guess that will make me the resident Junkette. I’ve been writing film reviews for over two years, and I run a pop culture website called Frothygirlz. I’m a whore for horror films, a rabid film enthusiast, and occasional radio show and podcast co-host. I’ve covered multiple film festivals and interviews, and I freelance for several print and online outlets.

After admiring the guys here at Film Junk from afar for some time now, I am thrilled to finally work with them. My film tastes run from conventional to eclectic, but I am partial to indie film, South Korean cinema (I Saw the Devil was one of my favorite films last year), and grisly fare. Greg and I have discovered that we have alarmingly close taste in films, barring horror. My top five films of 2010 were Black Swan, True Grit, The Social Network, 127 Hours, and The Kids Are All Right.

I’ll be contributing film reviews, occasional interviews, and whatever else might pop up. For the curious, skeptical, or already annoyed, you can access a full archive of my film reviews here.

My Favorite Film Junk Podcast Moments:

  • Jay’s Colon drama
  • Greg watching the wrong movie
  • When Jay’s grandma was awarded her driver’s license, but Jay was not

  • Bas

Hi Shannon, will you also make an appearance on the podcast, even just a call-in? It would be nice to “put a voice to the voice”. The same applies to Aaron and Colin of course.

  • Lars Von Tired

Moment #3 is second only to Frank’s Costner story.

    Welcome and good luck.

  • Shannon

Wow, thanks you all. How nice to be warmly greeted.

@dday, I live in Kansas City in the US. Believe it or not, we have a pretty strong film community here. No, I cannot explain Reed, but I love it when he is on the show.

@Bas I don’t know, those guys have a pretty good chemistry going on the podcast. I have co-hosted the Fat Guys at the Movies a handful of times, and I participate in a weekly podcast called Almost Locals Only that is available on iTunes.

Welcome! I enjoyed your review of Bridesmaids. I haven’t listened to the latest Film Junk podcast, but I have a feeling that the element you mentioned, how most women will see themselves in the characters, might not translate so well to men. Sort of like how in the early days of SNL, the men claimed they didn’t understand half of the sketches the women wrote. Similarly, some of the funniest moments in Bridesmaids produced blank stares from the guys I had to sit next to in the theater.

My point is, it’s great to have more women contributing to Film Junk!

  • Nicely done, Shannon!

  • Bozzer uk

    looking forward to your reviews

  • Aaron
