Chris Hemsworth Confirmed for Snow White and the Huntsman

Last week, an offer was put out to Thor star Chris Hemsworth for the role of the huntsman in the upcoming film Snow White and the Huntsman. The part has proven a tricky one to cast with names like Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman, and Joel Edgerton previously considered. This latest choice seems like a logical, though kind of unimaginative, move for Hemsworth now that he’s known as a muscle-bound action guy. In the new film, the role of the huntsman is expanded upon from the original Grimm fairy tale as he becomes Snow White’s protector and mentor, assisting her in vanquishing the evil queen, played by Charlize Theron. Rounding out the rest of the cast is Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) as the prince.

As I’ve yet to watch Thor, I can’t really comment on the talent level of Chris Hemsworth. I can say that his casting should help to compete with the cast of Tarsem Singh’s upcoming take on the same material in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, also due out next year. That’s right, just like Armageddon and Deep Impact in 1998, we’ll be experiencing a good, old-fashioned smack-down between very similar films. I know it can be annoying when something like this happens, but it can also be kind of interesting to compare and contrast the resulting films as well. Snow White and the Huntsman is being directed by first-timer Rupert Sanders and it currently has a release set for Dec. 21, 2012. What are your thoughts on Chris Hemsworth’s casting and which Snow White film are you more interested in right now?
