Marvel Considering Hawkeye and Black Widow Solo Films

With Thor hitting theatres in North America this weekend, reviews have been taking the web by storm, and so far they seem to be mostly positive. While I don’t necessarily expect it to stay at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes for long, it’s already getting a much better reception than I would have expected. One of the things people seem to be talking about is how they managed to make a lot of The Avengers set-up stuff a lot more interesting than it was in Iron Man 2 — which is good news for Marvel, because they do not have any plans to stop integrating characters across multiple movies. Apparently they are preparing to announce their next batch of films later this summer, and there is a good chance they will include more spin-offs featuring members of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. But do all of these minor characters really deserve their own film?
While talking to The Playlist last weekend, Marvel Films’ President of Production Kevin Feige revealed that they are currently holding discussions about a number of potential solo films. Leading the way as strong possibilities are Black Widow and Hawkeye, since clearly both Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner are big enough stars to carry a movie. Here’s what Feige had to say:
“There’s no definitive plans, but we have started talking and talking with Scarlett about what a Widow movie could be… Internally we’ve also started thinking what a Hawkeye movie could be, how we could continue to explore the organization S.H.I.E.L.D, which has a pretty big part in Thor, smaller parts in the two Iron Man’ films and has a giant part in The Avengers. [So it’s like], what would a stand-alone S.H.I.E.L.D. be like? It all goes back to the comics. Sometimes the answer is—when looking at a certain run of issues— ‘no way’ and sometimes the answer is ‘maybe, let’s continue to explore it’ and certainly with Hawkeye and Black Widow those are two that we’re exploring.”
It all sounds fairly non-committal, but he did also acknowledge that Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Ant-Man were possibilities as well. We know that Iron Man 3 will hit theatres on May 3rd, 2013, but after that it’s all up in the air and will likely depend on the success of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. So what do you think? What should the next phase of Marvel Films be, and which characters would you like to see get their own film?
