Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fast Five Makes a Record Setting Getaway

The Fast and Furious franchise continues to put the pedal to the metal after being refueled by the return of Vin Diesel. Fast Five notched the highest opening weekend yet for the series with an astounding $83.6 million — also the biggest April opening ever. As expected, nothing else even came close, as Rio held down the #2 spot with $14.4 million and Madea was at #3 with just over $10 mil. All of the weekend’s other new releases pretty much bombed including Prom ($5 million), Hoodwinked Too! ($4 million), and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, which opened at #16 with just $885,000. Horror comedies almost always fail at the box office, but even Superman couldn’t save this one from disaster.

1. Fast Five — $83.6M
2. Rio — $14.4M
3. Madea’s Big Happy Family — $10.1M
4. Water for Elephants — $9.12M
5. Prom — $5M
6. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil — $4.14M
7. Soul Surfer — $3.3M
8. Insidious — $2.69M
9. Hop — $2.56M
10. Source Code — $2.53M

Unbelievable! I hated the first…the acting was some of the worst I have ever seen and I liked Vin at that time…it was like seeing cardboard trying to act with dialogue so bad it could have been written by a caveman (Sorry Geico).

I just can’t believe this series has survived for so long and that the latest installment made $84 million!! $84 million???!!!!! Can’t believe it!

  • I’m right there with you 1138sw, I thought for sure after 2002’s dreadful first sequel to this franchise that it would just fade away. It’s crazy how big it is now.

FAST FIVE is a blast. Completely ridiculous, but FUN. Real stunts with real stuntmen risking their lives.

    I agree with Dan.
I actually enjoyed this more than the first film. Usually these movies seem like they’re mainly just about the cars and the racing, but this one focused more on the characters and had more action in it than any of the previous F&F movies put together. In my opinion, it was like The Wrath of Kahn, of the series.
Seeing Vin and the Rock on opposite sides of the law felt like Arnold v.s. Sly. Fun action pack film all the way through. Can’t knock it until you’ve watched it.

I agree with Derek, while not a fan of the 1st 3 at all I only want to see the last movie as my son wanted to go, however found it not bad. This one however was a blast, yeah bad script impossible action but damn! this is 80’s throwback action with some of the best car chase scenes i have witnessed. Like Dan said it had real stunts and whilst there was CGI it was completely unnoticable for the most part. I came out with a big cheesy grin on my face as did everyone else. Roll on part 6 I say!
