Film Junk Poll: What is the Best ’90s Horror Movie?

Most of us can probably agree that the ’90s were not particularly kind to the horror genre with many of the releases being little more than watered down PG-13 thrillers, but nevertheless there are still a handful of classic films that managed to come out of the decade (especially towards the beginning and end of it). In honour of this weekend’s Scream revival, I thought it might be a good time to take some of the more noteworthy ’90s horror flicks and put them head to head in our weekly poll. I’m sure there will be a bunch that I’ve forgotten about and/or chose not include here, but you should know by know that’s just how it works! Go ahead and cast your vote in this week’s poll and then discuss your favourites in the comments below.

    Sixth Sense, followed by Scream

  • Nils

Too many awesome choices, but Blair Witch wins because I think Lambs is more of a dark thriller.
Haven’t seen Jacobs Ladder or Dead Alive though.

  • Xidor

    Event Horizon

  • First Off, can I saw how awesomely astute putting in MOUTH OF MADNESS! Well done.

That being said, I went with Audition, which is excellent and above the goofier entries on the poll.

  • @Xidor

Event Horizon is some good shit.
I had to go with Blair Witch Project because that is the only movie in the selection that gave me butterflies in my tummy.

  • What the hell is Audition?

  • Snorfle

Is the Silence of the Lambs considered “horror”?

  • According to Wikipedia it is a “1991 American thriller film that blends elements of the crime and horror genres.” Is that good enough? Truth be told, the Sixth Sense is probably stretching the definition a bit as well.

Whoa ! Roger Ebert’s new face is scary !

He still loves his burgers apparently.

  • KeithTalent

I had to go with Blair Witch; at the time I saw that I had never really seen a film like that before and it kind of blew me away.

Lots of good films on that list though.

  • TheOtherJamesTaylor

Interesting, The Silence Of The Lambs and The Sixth Sense aren’t horror movies and The Blair Witch Project isn’t scary. I second the suggestion of Event Horizon.

  • Fatbologna

Jacob’s Ladder had more influence on the genre than it’s ever given credit for and it’s one of my personal favorites but In the Mouth of Madness wins for pure entertainment value. I consider it one of Carpenter’s best.

  • @snorfle

Silence of the Lambs is absolutely a horror film. You don’t find Buffalo Bill horrifying? Dude scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

  • auraldissonance

Jacob’s Ladder is the only movie on that list to truly frighten me in any way.

I wouldn’t even call Silence of the Lambs a horror movie. That’d be like calling CSI or Law and Order horror. Thriller, definitely, but not horror. Same goes for Sixth Sense though at least that one has a bit more claim to the genre with the ghosts and all.

  • Gil

    Jacob’s Ladder.
My favorite part in this film is in the hospital when his wife and kids visit him and you hear that voice say, “dream on…”

  • LUDY

No love for Dead Alive in these comments, seriously? That flick is classic…right up there with the Evil Dead films.

  • Aaron F.

Silence of the Lambs is not a horror film. It’s Psychological Thriller. Even though it’s the strongest movie on the list, I’d toss out those votes.
