Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief Gets a Remake

It looks like there’s yet another remake in our future, this time in the form of Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief. Screenwriter Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row), recently revealed that he, along with Bobby Florsheim, turned in a script to Paramount studios for the remake and that casting is already underway. To Catch a Thief follows the story of a former master jewel thief who must prove his innocence when accused of returning to his old ways. The 1955 version starred Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Their on-screen chemistry is often cited as among the best of all time. Stolberg describes the original as one of his favorite Hitchcock films and that the remake will act as “a travelogue of the most amazing places on Earth.”

As one of Hitchcock’s lighter films, To Catch a Thief might be a good candidate for a remake. By that I mean cinephiles might not throw as big of a fuss over it as they would if something like Vertigo were receiving the same treatment. Though it may bode well that Stolberg ranks To Catch a Thief as one of his favorite Hitchcock films, another part of his statement may give some cause for concern. Of the remake, he says, “it was fun to come at it from a different angle – make it a little bit more modern and gadgety.” Umm, gadgety? I’m not so sure about that. But regardless of the script, the real draw will be who is cast in the Grant and Kelly roles and what kind of chemistry they can produce together. What are your thoughts on a remake of To Catch a Thief?

  • While I understand the To Catch a Thief is one of the fluffier Hitchcock roles, it should still be left alone simply because it is a Hitchcock movie! Plus, there’s no way you can re-cast this movie without it being a huge step down from the originals.

    this is extremely silly.

  • I have to agree with Bryonic. There are certain movies that just should not get a remake. Either because of the genius of the director that can’t be beaten by anybody or because of special talents of the cast. I think that both these problems occur when I think about the remake of this movie.

Because of this article I watched this movie today and loved it. Before seeing the movie I was definitely feeling crappy, physically, and after watching the movie there was a smile on my face and I definitely felt less crappy, so thank you :)

I absolutely adore Grace Kelly in this role and I do love the chemistry between her and Cary Grant. I think people take for granted how good classic movies like this can be and it makes me wish that more people would see them, especially younger people.

I think a remake could be good, with the right director and the right actors. I could envision George Clooney in the role of John Robio, but I could also see a few other actors being a good fit for the role. I want to say maybe Angelina Jolie would be good in Grace Kelly’s role, but I’m having a hard time picking, in my mind, one actress that would be perfect for the part.

I have a hard time seeing Angelina Jolie in a movie these days and not picturing her as a mom or as Brad Pitt’s soulmate. I don’t know, maybe that’s just a personal limitation on my part.

Olivia Wilde might work for the part. She has the intelligence, wit, and wickedness, in the right combination to make the role work for her. I forgot to mention she also has the perfect amount of sex appeal to be able to make it work ;)

Couldn’t state it better than what’s already posted above. Those are some big shoes to fill both in front of the camera and behind it. I for one will pass on watching the remake, I don’t want it to spoil my fondness for the original.

  • I am not sure you will be able to even match let alone surpass this classic .. as always if it comes down to the script, the Direction .. but in this case the important aspect of all the actors … I am not sure there are two actors anywhere in this time .. that have this much chemistry let alone class … it certainly is not about the gadgets … .. for the actress perhaps Kate Winslett (not sure) .. for the actor .. there no one like Cary Grant … or even close. please leave it alone … it would be like someone trying to do a updated Casablanca .. not possible
