Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief Gets a Remake

It looks like there’s yet another remake in our future, this time in the form of Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief. Screenwriter Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row), recently revealed that he, along with Bobby Florsheim, turned in a script to Paramount studios for the remake and that casting is already underway. To Catch a Thief follows the story of a former master jewel thief who must prove his innocence when accused of returning to his old ways. The 1955 version starred Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Their on-screen chemistry is often cited as among the best of all time. Stolberg describes the original as one of his favorite Hitchcock films and that the remake will act as “a travelogue of the most amazing places on Earth.”
As one of Hitchcock’s lighter films, To Catch a Thief might be a good candidate for a remake. By that I mean cinephiles might not throw as big of a fuss over it as they would if something like Vertigo were receiving the same treatment. Though it may bode well that Stolberg ranks To Catch a Thief as one of his favorite Hitchcock films, another part of his statement may give some cause for concern. Of the remake, he says, “it was fun to come at it from a different angle – make it a little bit more modern and gadgety.” Umm, gadgety? I’m not so sure about that. But regardless of the script, the real draw will be who is cast in the Grant and Kelly roles and what kind of chemistry they can produce together. What are your thoughts on a remake of To Catch a Thief?
