Disney Setting Up Sci-Fi Film The Runner, Marc Forster Tapped to Direct

Marc Forster is a director who likes to jump from one genre to the next. He can easily transition from a family drama like Finding Neverland to a comedy like Stranger Than Fiction to an action thriller like Quantum of Solace, his entry in the James Bond series. With that in mind, I’m not surprised that Forster’s next project could very well be a sci-fi adventure for Disney, entitled The Runner. The story takes place in 2027 as Earth’s surface has become “uninhabitable due to a devastating attack.” A group of survivors who live within the Rocky Mountains have found a way to send someone back in time to stop the attack. However, the volunteer for the mission has an additional motive for going back – to save the love of his life. Dave Andron, currently a writer/producer on the TV series Justified, will pen the script.
Apparently Disney has high hopes for The Runner since they will be simultaneously developing the property for multiple platforms, such as TV, video games, graphic novels, etc. To further add to the hoopla, heavy-hitting producer Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment has signed on and will produce alongside Forster’s Apparatus Entertainment partner Brad Simpson. Marc Forster is currently wrapping on Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler, so hopefully we’ll hear more on his involvement with The Runner in the near future. As for the premise of the film, it certainly sounds like your typical tentpole story, although with a time travel element involved, I’m usually somewhat interested. What are your thoughts on The Runner thus far?
