Jonah Hill Setting Up Directorial Debut with The Kitchen Sink

Of all the actors to turn to directing, I wouldn’t have guessed Jonah Hill would make the transition. However, that’s exactly what he is in talks to do with The Kitchen Sink, an upcoming horror-comedy being set up at Sony. The script, written by Oren Uziel, was a top choice on 2010 Black List for the best unproduced screenplays. Described as a coming of age tale, the story concerns “the unlikely alliance between a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as they try to save their town from invading aliens.” Additionally, Matt Tolmach, a producer on the film, said it’s “more in the spirit of The Breakfast Club than anything. The title is said to be a self-aware reference to the fact that the screenwriter has included every currently popular movie monster/creature in the script.

While the thought of Jonah Hill directing might seem odd, this is exactly the type of material he is well-suited to oversee. Although the movie seems ambitious for a first-time director, I’m interested to see what comes of it. Scripts from the Black List aren’t necessarily a slam-dunk when it comes to quality, but at least they separate themselves from the norm. It’s worth noting that Hill has been establishing himself well at Sony with his 21 Jump Street movie with Channing Tatum and Ice Cube, as well as the baseball drama Moneyball. Perhaps the promise of those projects has helped Hill land his directing gig, and will allow him to further expand his career choices. What do you think of Jonah Hill directing The Kitchen Sink?
