Kobe Bryant is The Black Mamba: A Short Film Directed by Robert Rodriguez

Well we’ve been seeing teasers for this intriguing short film pop up online over the past few weeks, and although I kinda thought it would be a Super Bowl commercial, they ended up saving it for the NBA All Star Game instead. (It may also end up playing in theatres as well.) Yes, it’s a six-minute long Nike commercial directed by Robert Rodriguez, but before you call the man a sellout, you might want to give it a look.

You see, the short film is done in the style of his Grindhouse trailers and films, with Kobe Bryant playing an action hero by the name of The Black Mamba. It also happens to star Bruce Willis, Danny Trejo and even Kanye West. The entire thing is now available on YouTube, and if you ask me, it’s actually a lot of fun. Not only would I pay to see this as a feature length movie, I might even buy a few pairs of Nike shoes while I’m at it. Check out the video after the jump and see what you think.

    Flashbacks of Space Jam.

  • It’s great, but only because of Trejo and because I know Rodriguez did it. Probably wouldn’t even think to watch it otherwise. But from Rodriguez’s perspective, why not do it?

Nike has always gone after quirky indie directors to bring their thing to shoe ads. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes did them years ago. Jared Hess did a series of Nike commercials right after Napoleon Dynamite. And John Horn of the LA Times recently called Alejandro González Iñárritu’s World Cup Nike short the best film of the 2010 so … I want to see Charlie Kauffman’s.

The short film should have been called “The Black Hole”

PASS THE FUCKING BALL KOBE… WE GET IT!!! THE ALL STAR GAME IS IN LA. IT’S YOUR NIGHT. PASS THE FUCKING BALL!!!!

  • kyri

I would rather eat a bullet that watch another mediocre ratdriguez I-am-so-cool self-indulging piece of Shit “film”

    And loose the fucking hat!

  • jonblaze87

    “A Nike Basketball Production”.

    Lame….

  • Greg

@dirrrtyfrank: MVP! MVP! This is awesome and so is Kobe.

    Nike can do another one.

Chris Paul is: The Human Turnover Machine.

  • KeithTalent

Fuck that rapist. They should make Blake Superior instead.

  • KeithTalent

Also, and it pains me to say it, LBJ should have won the All-star MVP (not that it really means anything). A triple double and almost single-handedly brought his team back to win. Did you see him in the 4th quarter? He was a freaking monster!

  • Brugalito

@Keith Talent, yeah he would have got it if the East won but they didn’t making the Best player in the West win MVP…..I think thats how it works anyway.

the video is actually pretty cool but I wouldn’t see a movie about it though

Come on we would all be watching the commercials during games if they were all like this. Advertisments are a necessary evil, so why not make them a necessary evil with Danny trejo, a mildly racist title and Bruce Willis. I think it’s odd that he was’nt fighting to have an underage girls soul to be released from hell.

  • typical Rodriguez – can’t tell a story so he resorts to the easy way out and tells it to the audience directly. Got to give him props; by using himself as the on screen narrator (sitting with Kobe no less) his inabilities will make him even more widely know, and even more of a director celebrity! he’s the “Jersey Shore” of directors

  • Darksiders

pretty boring overall….and still about shoes…

  • Justice

Kobe is the G.O.A.T. Love RR. This is awesome. End of story.

  • haters gonna hate, ballers gonna ball
