X-Men: First Class Trailer

Initially I thought it was a bad sign that X-Men: First Class was one of the few summer blockbusters missing in action during the Super Bowl last weekend, but now that they’ve released the first official trailer online, I think it’s safe to say that they actually made a wise decision. While all of the other movies were trying to cram tons of high-energy action sequences and cool one-liners into just 30 seconds, the first trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men prequel takes its time establishing a tone and a time period, putting drama and characters above flashy visual effects.

That’s not to say there is no excitement in the trailer, however. We do get some brief glimpses of Mystique and Emma Frost transforming, Beast flying a plane, and Havok unleashing a plasma blast, but it definitely seems to be going for something a little more “real world”, if such a thing is possible with the X-Men. I’m definitely impressed and looking forward to seeing if the director of Kick-Ass of all people can bring a level of maturity to this franchise that we haven’t yet seen. What do you think, are things finally looking up for X-Men: First Class? The movie hits theatres on June 3rd; check out the trailer after the jump.

From the moment this film was announced, I was expecting it to be more teen/tween focused, but it’s looking more promising the more I see of it. The whole Cuban Missile Crisis stuff could be interesting if they manage it well. Hopefully they’ll also stay true to the time period in plot and dialog.

If they want to make some serious coin with this, they need to release it now. This summer is way too crowded.

The Effects look amazing. Better than X3… I’m shocked this was only in production for barly a year.

  • Fatbologna

Cold War-centric X-Men story makes Fatbologna a happy boy! This could be as good as, or better than the second flick which is the only REALLY good one of the series.

I liked 1 and 3 but they never really made me cum.

  • The Man

Part 3 was one of the worst 3rd in a trilogy I’d ever seen. I almost walked out.

  • Cakadoodle

I’m not exited 2 see it but neither am I disappointed, I feel a little more than ambivalence

  • Ben

Emma Frost transforming? Great, haven’t even watched the trailer and I’m already groaning.

  • ShenEvil44

Normally, I would be legitimately excited to see this movie. However, I had the same feelings when I saw the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and that movie was barely watchable. I’m being cautiously optimistic with this one.

  • If things had gone as originally planned, Kick-Ass would have been “from the director of X-Men 3!”. Remember, Matthew Vaughan was originally slated to do the third X-Men flick, and it was his leaving/dismissal/whatever it was that led to the super duper rushed Last Stand. After that, Vaughan was connected to Thor, before leaving THAT too, right? Nice to see that Marvel doesn’t hold grudges (though I’m not sure how much of his involvement was Fox or Marvel’s doing), and maybe THIS is the X-Men movie that Vaughan was destined to make from the beginning!

  • Looks solid like I may enjoy this; but I thought the same thing about KICK-ASS and I was very wrong.

Five people credited for the screenplay on imdb!? Wow, hopefully that’s just the right amount of cooks in the kitchen.

  • Captain N

Can’t say it did anything for me. It wasn’t as bad as I expected but unfortunately it falls almost as flat as the photos have.

  • Napalm

Looks like Magneto/Fassbender will own this film! Can’t wait!

  • berserker01

Wasn’t it a mistake to show the other X films? This one cannot be in the same continuity, the character’s ages don’t make sense.

  • Niklas

    looks better than I expected

  • Goon

as expected, this awesome trailer comes out and the comic nerds I know are all like “but Emma Frost doesnt learn to transform until later in life!” “but but but Cyclops is older than Havok!”

…because in the end apparently a completely accurate adapation of the comic is more imporant than a good film, right? One of these friends absolutely hates Hellboy II for this same stupid reason..

  • Juan

I wanted to like the trailer but i dont. For some reason im not excited to see this movie.. I’ll wait for the second trailer

  • Kasper

    Meh…

  • Fatbologna

    Goon,

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this looks great. Cynicism abounds when it comes to this movie for some reason. Hopefully Vaughn proves everyone wrong.

    Kasper,
Really?? “Meh”? That’s all you’ve got? You use the single most annoying internet phrase ever concocted and then fly off into the night?! That shit’s the absolute worst…

  • patrik

looks awesome, as I always thought it would.. Don´t understand why people get so worried.. It´s Matthew Vaughn, have a little faith.

  • Kasper

18: Fitting for the movie at hand. It’s not bad in a way that makes you want to rip on it, but neither is it interesting in the least. It’s the kind of movie befitting of a “meh”.

  • rjdelight

    Beast looks awesome!

  • 1138sw

I thought this trailer looked pretty good…though why is Havok in this movie…I have not followed the comics for awhile so things could have changed storyline wise or the studio is just opting for a completely different universe.

Looks good and I was one of the few who liked Kick-Ass. I hope Vaughn gets this right.

Boy this is a comic fest this summer with Thor, Lantern, America and now this all coming out. I hope this summer is not as disappointing as last summer.

  • Akumetsu

    Berzerker01,

The characters ages actually DO make sense, because it’s a *prequel*. This is the X-Men history prior to the last 3 films.
