When it was announced back in December that Jon Favreau would not be returning to direct Iron Man 3, expectations for the film seemed to drop significantly overnight. Although Favreau claimed he had simply left to pursue other projects, there was a widespread belief that his departure was due to disillusionment with the future direction of the franchise, not to mention Marvel’s penny pinching ways. Could a new director step in and not only fill Favreau’s shoes, but also generate excitement for the series again? Marvel is reportedly considering a number of candidates right now, and one that just might get fans fired up is Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black.
According to Heat Vision, Black recently met with Marvel about directing the project, although his involvement is still “far from a sure thing.” It is believed that he would potentially write the script as well, although these kinds of blockbusters rarely end up with a single writer listed in the credits. Still, it does present an intriguing possibility: Iron Man 3 as a buddy cop flick starring Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle?
Shane Black previously worked with Robert Downey Jr. on his directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which is probably a major selling point for Marvel. He does currently have a couple of other projects on his plate, including the manga adaptation Death Note and also a new Doc Savage movie. However, since Iron Man 3 has a projected release date of May 3, 2013, hopefully he will be able to fit it in his schedule. The man certainly has a knack for blending action and comedy, and this project seems like it could be a great fit. Are you excited about possibly seeing Shane Black write and direct the next Iron Man flick?
