Shawn Levy to Direct Fantastic Voyage Remake

Twentieth Century Fox’s 3-D remake of Fantastic Voyage has been in the works for quite a while now and a number of high-profile directors have been considered to helm the tentpole film. Producer James Cameron has led the search and has discussed the film with the likes of Paul Greengrass, Darren Aronofsky, Timur Bekmambetov, Jonathan Mostow and Louis Leterrier (Greengrass was even attached to direct at one point). So, who is the latest choice to take the reins on this big budget spectacle? According to Deadline.com, Shawn Levy, director of such family-oriented fare as Night at the Museum and Cheaper By the Dozen, will be the man for the job.
At first, Levy may seem like an odd choice for sci-fi / adventure material, but given how successful he’s been at Fox in the past, it’s not difficult to see why he was hired. It certainly sends the message that Fox and Cameron are playing things safe with Fantastic Voyage, which isn’t that surprising. After all, it’s an expensive project where a majority of the scenes will play put almost exclusively in CGI. Really, what more could we ask for than a hired-gun director who will deliver what the studio wants? Seriously though, while Levy is known for easily-digestible comedies, he’s started to branch out in material with his upcoming robot film Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman. That may turn out to be another easily-digestible Levy film with a change of genre, but at least he’ll have some sci-fi experience under his belt for the upcoming remake.
