First Official Clip from Kevin Smith’s Red State

With the Red State U.S.A. Tour about to kick off at the beginning of March, we are now starting to see Kevin Smith go out of his way to do some marketing and publicity type stuff to help promote it. Yes, this despite the fact that he claimed he would not be doing any press for the film whatsoever. He has done a few interviews since Sundance (including one in Time Magazine, no less), and now the first ever clip from the film has debuted over on MTV Movies Blog. Could it be that he is starting to realize that he can’t do it all alone?

The clip does not reveal much in the way of action, but it does feature Melissa Leo as a covert member of a right-wing church, luring teenage boys in with the promise of booze and sex. The boys are played by Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner and Nicholas Braun. It may seem like an odd choice as the first bit of footage to reveal to the world, but the fact that Leo is also up for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress may have something to do with it. (She also recently took out ads to promote herself in various Hollywood trades.) Does this clip change your preconceptions of what a Kevin Smith movie can be? Watch it after the jump and let us know what you think.

it looks interesting but the clip really doesnt do much so i am actually on the fence.

  • Mind altering substances and sex? Sure seems like a Kevin Smith movie to me.

  • Totally agree with Rian. A 1 minute clip is clearly enough to realize this is just as bad as all his other films.

  • Matt

Clip didn’t really do anything for me. Like to see another clip before I decide if I want to see it.

  • Dana

Hey PillowPants, your name is PillowPants, no one gives a shit what you think. This movie is gonna be awesome.

  • Matt

@Dana it’s a “forum”. You can post your opinion. Pillow pants has his opinion and thinks it’s going to suck, I’m undecided, and your a Kevin Smith fanboy.

  • Juan

I really want to see this movie. I like Kevin Smith strategy to promote it by himself.

  • Kevin was on the Adam Carolla podcast recently talking about the film. They sorta interviewed each other for about 2 hours, it was entertaining.

  • Don

I thought kevin smith said he wouldn’t spend any money on promotion for the film, not that he wouldn’t do any traditional kinds of promotion for the film.

  • Werner

Promotion? Smith keeps appearing on talk shows discussing how he has lost 65 pounds since the “too fat to fly” incident….

The clip is fine – but it would also be fine if it was from a movie by a unknown director….
