New to Theatres This Weekend: The Mechanic, The Rite, Ip Man 2

It’s a strange collection of movies hitting theatres this weekend, but when it comes down to it, most of the titles seem to fall in line with the usual January expectations. First up we’ve got a couple of middling genre cast-offs including a remake of the Charles Bronson cult classic The Mechanic starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster, and the Anthony Hopkins exorcism thriller The Rite. In select theatres we’ve also got Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful (the movie that earned Javier Bardem an Oscar nomination for Best Actor), plus Gregg Araki’s sci-fi comedy Kaboom and the martial arts sequel Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster. Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours also expands to a large number of theatres in an attempt to ride the wave of Oscar buzz. Will you be watching anything this weekend?

Looking forward to watching The Mechanic, it’s going to be awesome. Most of Stathams movies are usually very entertaining turn-your-brain-off actionflicks

Mechanic was fun. mindless action. Tony Goldwyn is in full “Ghost” mode as the bad guy.

This weekend The Mechanic came in third at the box office. The estimated take was $11.5 million. This film, starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster, is a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film. The movie is not too bad but it couldn’t beat The Rite starring Anthony Hopkins or No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. Portman’s career is soaring right now with her recent wins on the award shows circuit. She just won a SAG award for best actress in The Black Swan. But, the competition was not the only problem with this film. There was no real screen chemistry with Statham and Foster. It almost seemed that they were performing in different films and when they were together onscreen it just seemed awkward. If you like bang ‘em ups and shoot em’ ups you’re sure to love this gore fest.
