Ridley Scott and Kevin MacDonald’s Life in a Day to Stream for Free on YouTube Today

One of the many movies that premiered at Sundance this week is Life in a Day, the crowdsourced documentary produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland). Last year they put out a call on YouTube for people around the world to record footage of their lives on July 24th, 2010 and submit it. Then they spent 6 months combing through over 4,500 hours of footage, trying to put it all together in a meaningful and cinematic way. Did they succeed? Find out for yourself when the movie streams for free on YouTube later today!

This may not be the first movie to use crowdsourcing, but it’s definitely one of the most ambitious. Moments captured in the film include “a Korean man who has been cycling the world for nine years, a young mother battling cancer, and a Russian free-runner making Moscow his playground.” Anyone whose footage appears in the film is also credited as a co-director.

Life in a Day will stream on YouTube at 6 pm MT (8 pm EST), but for people in other time zones that are unable to watch there will be an encore presentation tomorrow at 7 pm in your local time zone. The premiere will be followed by a Q&A with Kevin Macdonald and 26 of the co-directors. Check out a couple of teaser trailers below, and stay tuned to YouTube.com/LifeInADay for the premiere.

I only caught the last hour and ten minutes. I thought it was great. I tried the one with the audio description as well, but thought it cheapened what they all ready accomplished.

@Gil — audio description enables people who are blind or visually impaired to enjoy the visual aspects of the film. Without sight, I think you would miss out on a lot of what was happening in Life In A Day.
