The Wachowskis Working on Two More Matrix Sequels… in 3-D?

Update: Sadly it seems this rumour has already been debunked by various sources. Keanu did not make any such appearance.
So here’s a pretty intriguing rumour (and it is just a rumour) to start off the week. It seems that Keanu Reeves was recently in England to promote his new movie Henry’s Crime, and while he was there he delivered a keynote speech to the London International School of Performing Arts and fielded some questions from the crowd. In addition to confirming his own willingness to do another sequel to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, he also dropped another, much bigger bombshell: according to him, the Wachowskis are in the early stages of development on not one but two brand new Matrix films. Are you ready to re-enter The Matrix?
If Keanu is to be believed, they are hoping to return to the sci-fi franchise that made them a household name, only this time using cutting edge 3-D technology. The report comes from an Ain’t It Cool News reader, who may or may not be the most reliable source, but here’s what he had to say anyway:
He [Keanu] met the Wachowski’s (no emphasis on the word brothers), for lunch over Christmas and stated that they had completed work on a two picture script treatment that would see him return to the world of the matrix as Neo. Says the brothers have met with Jim Cameron to discuss the pro’s and con’s of 3D and are looking to deliver something which has never been seen again. keanu stated that he still has an obligation to the fans to deliver a movie worthy of the title “The Matrix” and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionise the action genre like the first movie. Wachowski’s are working on a movie called “Cloud Atlas” at the moment, once that concludes they will talk again.
While I’m sure this news will be met with plenty of scorn from the blogosphere, I have to say, I’m pretty excited about the possibilities. Yes, The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions had some serious problems, and yes, a coherent continuation might be difficult to come by. But with all the talk of converting old movies to 3-D, The Matrix has certainly been mentioned as a possibility, and I’d much rather see something new that was made specifically for 3-D.
Anyone who enjoyed Speed Racer must surely agree that The Wachowskis still have what it takes to create some exciting and unique visuals on the big screen. Whether or not they can salvage The Matrix universe remains to be seen, but I think we should at least give them the benefit of the doubt. What do you think? Do you want to see two new Matrix movies in 3-D or is this just a terrible idea?
