Open Forum Friday: Do You Want to See a Tron: Legacy Sequel?

Before Christmas there was a lot of speculation about whether or not Tron: Legacy would actually end up turning a profit due to its massive budget and potentially obscure source material, but we’re now halfway through January and the movie is pretty close to breaking even domestically, in addition to crossing $300 million worldwide. It’s the 14th biggest movie of 2010 and it could potentially make its way up to #10. So now that the movie has proven itself to be financially viable, discussions have inevitably turned to the possibility of a sequel. Disney is reportedly mulling this over right now, and according to Ain’t It Cool News, we might get an announcement any day now. However, if we put all the financials aside, I think the more important question is, does anyone actually want to see a third Tron movie?

I liked Tron: Legacy, but I have a hard time imagining what I might get out of another sequel and where they might go with the story. There has been talk that Cillian Murphy’s brief appearance as Edward Dillinger was setting him up as a potential villain for the next movie, which certainly seems like the only explanation for giving him such a minor role. Disney already has a Tron animated series coming in 2012 called Tron: Uprising to help build up the younger fanbase and potentially expand the universe. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t introduce many characters that seem like they would be worth revisiting, and now that we’ve seen the updated visuals, I feel like a third movie would be kind of redundant. What do you think? Are you interested in another Tron movie? Could a sequel actually improve on Tron: Legacy’s flaws? Does Tron have the potential to be a massive franchise for Disney or should they just call it a day and move on? Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel. Legacy seemed to follow the original’s overall plot from scene to scene pretty closely, so I’d like to see what they can come up with in a new storyline.

I’d like to see Bridges return, but I can see how he might not. That would lower my expectations, but the visuals are the real star of these films, so my interest is still piqued.

    NO!

  • I loved the film – so that’s a big yes from me. Bring Tron 3 on, baby!

Wrote an article called “Tron: Legacy of Missed Opportunities”. Tron: Legacy had such a huge story to tell but fell short in every aspect of it. They had a whole world to let us discover but instead focused on some burnout and his son repairing their relationship. A pretty boring relationship at that. If they make it an epic about the Grid itself I’m in. More of the same stuff as Legacy? No thanks.

My question is where could a sequel go… My only thought is the digital world comes to our world. I would see it though.

Although the original Tron holds a very special place in my 80’s nostalgic heart, it’s not a very good movie. I actually liked Legacy better even though it made absolutely no sense whatsoever (ISO’s?! Really?). I don’t know what’s left to explore in the Tron universe, but if it’s as fun as the sequel, I’m all for it.

  • People have commented that they don’t know where the Tron world could go from here. Are they kidding? Years ago, when Disney first talked of a Tron sequel, they talked of how exciting it would be to update Tron with such new innovations as the internet. But the Grid was a closed system. I would love a sequel that takes us on a journey through the internet. You would see different areas showing different cultures, internet lifestyles, etc. I would like to see how they visualize a virus. Is it a scary Tron-like guy, a creature, or just something intangible that destroys the programs?

    I see much potential.

    no…. just, no.

    Maybe in 29 years.

didnt like the original, didnt see the remake or reboot, so i can safely say no to wanting to see a sequel

The Tron universe is one of infinite possibilities!

The original movie is wonderful, the sequel was amazing, and the story could continue in any number of compelling ways. I would LOVE to see a sequel!

As long as we have computers, we can always have Tron stories to entertain us, comment on where things are headed, warn us of the dangers, and amaze us with new sights and sounds.

I also really enjoyed the graphic novel that was recently published called Tron: Betrayal, which tells the story of what happened between the two movies.

They could do a sequel trying to explain the previous movie.

That Garret Hedlund guy was awful, and Olivia Wilde…while incredibly striking, wasn’t that interesting either. Jeff Bridges carried it and i don’t see them bringing him back in a sequel. So, no.

  • they really need to shake this up. every scene being the same thing is REALLY boring. you have to mix it up for audiences these days. first simple idea would be some story with a cross platform type scenario or system changes beget system changes so we can see new digital environments and introduce chaos in those environments.

you could really see the story telling limitations of Joseph Kosinski in the first film; he just doesn’t understand how to build characters, plot and conflict. I agree with comments about – for all the great visuals and design he was supposed to bring to this franchise I saw nothing truly awe inspiring. really a shame, being a designer he dropped a great opportunity to “set the bar”

If they would put as much love and attention to the script as they did with the design of the sequel then I’d be up for another one.

  • THE FOLLOWING IS A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO FIND A FORGOTTEN FILM – NOT SURE WHERE I WOULD PUT THIS POST SO I’LL START HERE

Fellow junk addicts, I come to you with a problem, a film I saw as a teen that I have never been able to remember enough off to be able to find. If you have a minute to read my clues there is a prize awaiting the addict who can most help me – yes if you point me in the right direction I’d thank you with your very own official merchandised Reed Farrington t-shirt! Seriously – I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy one and this could be it.
    OK
I’m after the name of an 80’s horror/sci-fi film, the film is from the 80’s, if I had to guess I’d say mid cos I saw it in Melbourne on VHS in the late 80’s and I’d say it had been out for a while – it was no new release that’s for sure and I don’t think it did any big business when it had it’s cinema release.
Heres the hard bit, my memory is sketchy but it’s this, there are normal people in the film, a couple of boys I think, anyway they run into these Demons type creatures, kind of green faced, with normal bodies – atleast nothing crazy like 5 eyes and tales if you get my meaning, the faces were green I think, eyes were red probably – you know, your classic demon look without being too intense like Bava/Argento’s Demon design, they didn’t have big teeth and crazy eyes like their Demons, but not far off.
I don’t remember the story but the scene that I have in mind plays out in a field where an archway, an ancient archway is the entrance to either another world or the Demon world, I think the boys have too at some stage find this entry, which looked like Stonehenge but with a structure you could enter, I remember this scene that when approaching the archway there was movement in the grass which scared the boys approaching, in the grass were more Demons or creatures – and that I’m afraid is all I have – I just remember thinking that the design of the world was really cool, the Demons were kind of scary but this was a great hidden world. Why do I not remember more of a film I seem to have liked so much – I was 16, when I wasn’t thinking about girls I was thinking about getting stoned, and I only thought about these things to get my mind of my greatest worry – studies. Anyway if it’s too abstract a description I do love Demon films so any you might recommend in lieu of my forgotten film would be great. Thanks for reading – JB

yes, if they get Daft Punk back to do the music.

  • Cal

Yes if they can come up with a better story AND if Jeff Bridges is back in. No if either one is missing. Kind of like a computer ‘AND’ logic statement.

  • I would absolutely love a sequel! The movie was absorbing and exciting, and my friends and I all loved it. Everyone I’ve recommended it to enjoyed it too. We’re all very curious about where the story will go. Can’t wait!

  • Strand0410

I don’t see why even people who hated Tron Legacy will NOT want a sequel. It doesn’t impinge on their ability to enjoy other films. Live and let live, others will surely enjoy it.

Seeing as I loved both Trons, sign me up!
