Thor Trailer Starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman

Who knows why it has taken so long for an official trailer to arrive online for Thor, but Marvel has clearly had a difficult time trying to figure out how to market this thing. When an early Comic-Con trailer leaked online back in July, it seemed to divide fans over whether or not it was going to make for a kick ass action movie or a goofy fantasy flick. Now they have released an official trailer over on Yahoo!, and although it doesn’t look all that different, I think they have made some subtle improvements.

At two-and-a-half minutes, it’s a pretty long teaser trailer, and it sets up a lot of the story of the film… maybe even giving away a little too much. Odin (Anthony Hopkins) throws Thor out of Valhalla and banishes him to live on Earth as a human, until he discovers his hammer and regains his powers. We also get a slightly better look at Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s brother Loki, who sends The Destroyer to defeat Thor. It seems like director Kenneth Branagh is maintaining that tricky balance between the fantasy elements and the Earth-based stuff. At the very least, I’m definitely curious to see how this turns out. What do you think, is this trailer everything you had hoped for? Is Chris Hemsworth’s hammer big enough? Thor hits theatres on May 6th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

i liked this trailer a little better than the Green Lantern trailer. Marvel seems to have a better grasp of whats its doing.

  • Napalm

i don’t know how to feel about this. something about the fantasy and the earth-based stuff seem to not work very well together. the effects look sketchy too.

  • pcch7

    looks pretty god damn awesome..

  • rjdelight

Can’t wait for future Santa on the big screen.

  • Strand0410

I was also more hyped for the Green Lantern movie, but this just… looks better I suppose.

  • This is so much better than the leaked Comic Con footage. Major upgrade and gives me hope to the project.

  • MikeH

the one advantage that this flick has…..Natalie Portman, damn she is hot.

  • Niklas

I like the look of this but… there is something off about it. Anthony Hopkins doesn’t fit either.. he is too… Anthony Hopkins.

  • pcch7

the only thing I don´t quite like is the way the hammer flies back when he throws it.. I wonder if they´ll do the same thing with Captain Americas shield..

  • Ben

@pcch7, Well, considering mjolnir is magical (and therefore, the effect makes perfect sense) and Cap’s shield simply works like a boomerang (using phony Marvel science) I sincerely hope that it won’t quite be the same thing.

  • Fatbologna

Thor’s got a bit of the gayface.

    That beard’s no good.

Anthony Hopkins should have retired when he said he was going to.

Other than that this looks slightly better than expected. Can’t wait to see how they fuck this up by overdoing Avengers workup.

Looks like there’s going to be some good CGI.
Although I think the costumes look bit gaysh/geekish, and it’s kind of weird looking at Hopkins acting all so serious with that geeky shiny dress.

  • Hugh

I loved the Thor comic book. The primary reason for this was the awesome artwork of the legendary Jack Kirby.

The film will have a real job to come close to emulating Mr Kirby’s vision and sensibility and will probaly disapoint me in that way.

However, the inner comic book nerd in me will inevitably see me watching thisfilm in a theatre the minute that it is released in Scotland.

  • phil

The costumes look Jack Kirby enough! This could be fun

anyone know if this is filmed in 3d, or post-filming 3d conversion?

  • Nelson Smith

I thought that the trailer was awesome and this gives me a lot of hope as far as the “Captain America” and “Avengers” movies are concerned.

Now I am wondering what the X-Men movies would have been like if they had been done by Marvel Studios instead of Fox.

I’m also wondering if we are reaching the point of overkill with all of these superhero movies. It’s really hard for me to say yes to that question, being a long time comic book fan, but there are a LOT of these movies coming out in the next couple of years, some of them are going to be great and some of them, not so much. So my question is…which is which, because for me the worst kind of disappointment is getting excited to go to one of these movies and then being completely let down after seeing the film.

“Elektra” and “Daredevil” come to mind, but those are films that I’m pretty sure someone higher up knew shouldn’t have been made in the first place, or should have been made in a drastically different way, but people turned a blind eye instead of just stopping production.

    Anyway, we will see.
