2010 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Awards: Voting is Now Open!

With the end of 2010 almost upon us, it’s time to look back on all the movies we’ve spent time watching and figure out which ones were actually worthwhile. In a couple of weeks, we’ll be unveiling our own Best of 2010 lists, but it’s also become a bit of a tradition around here to ask you, the readers, to pick your favourite movies of the year. Once again we have divided up the year’s crop into categories and nominated 5 films for each, partially based on our own opinions and partially based on general consensus. Now the rest is up to you.

I’m sure there will be plenty of debate over the nominees and the division of categories, but I guess that’s part of the fun. The main goal was to create a set of categories where there were no obvious winners, although in some cases that’s easier said than done. Also, in order to be eligible, movies had to get a U.S. theatrical release in 2010. You can only vote once, so be sure to get it right the first time. We’ll announce the winners just after Christmas, but in the meantime, feel free to discuss your picks in the comments below. What are you waiting for? Cast your votes for the 2010 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Awards!

This seems to have been a pretty weak year compared to last or even 2008, IMO. I only really liked Shutter Island and Inception. Everything else was OK or bad.

  • Sam

The Fighter could make a late charge.

  • I have to abstain as I didn’t see all of the films and the voting function does not allow partial ballots. The truthfulness of collected Film Junk data is unquestionable and I hold it very close to my heart as the kind of sociological query that will lead or children’s children to a brighter future.

  • MikeH

where is Beauty Day for best doc?

this year for flicks was not all that great.

  • I had a great time this year. There were a lot of diverse films released and some of the great directors appear to be back to their best.

    Top Five
Once Upon a Time in the West – re-released for a film festival in my locale and pure cinematic magic.
Exit Through the Gift Shop – mixing fact and fiction in a way the departed only dreams of.
The Social Network – the holy trinity of a great director, cast and script do not disappoint.
The American – a tense character study where plot is all but secondary.
The Expendables – a great nostalgic view of an action film without the need of being steeped with irony.

    Honourable mentions:
Piranha 3D – a gore comedy for the ages.
Let Me In – slightly inferior remake but made with a brilliant atmosphere and featuring one of the best car crash sequences put to celluloid.

The Black Swan and The Fighter could also be in the mix. Enter the Void could easily make the list but it screened in my country three times and a Bluray release is some time away.

Machete underwhelmed, Kick-Ass was extreme fun but hampered by tonal issues, Scott Pilgrim was lame and Inception never quite delivered.

  • Werner

    Put in my votes.

I’ve seen all listed movies but Black Swan.

  • Tomoo

I am sad that I can’t put Exit Through the Gift Shop as the years best film, actually that category has no documentarys. What gives? Guess I will have to think on it more now.

  • GfC

Since this function got more than 10 alternatives, why can’t you just use this to make polls?

  • Robin

Inception ALL the way. Had so much fun watching and discussing this film.

  • Dokter Mandrake

@GfC – You seem to have mistaken Film Junk for a poll taking site. Try this http://www.twiigs.com/

  • Xidor

Could this be a toppic for the 300th episode? Will there be a live show?

  • GfC

    @Dokter

Whenver Sean sets up a poll, people complain that their movie isn’t on the list (and the complaints are legitimate). Sean answers back that he can only have a maximum of 10 alternatives of the poll he has (he could just easly find a new one, but…). Therefore my suggestion is that he uses this as a poll.

  • Actually the plug-in I’m using for this poll only allows up to 10 options per question as well.

  • GfC

Jesus Christ, Sean. Stop treating this as a competition, as a debate. People are complaining, and if you care to stop and think about it, and actually WANT to do something about it for the benefit of Filmjunk’s readers needs, you know what to do. There are thousands of polls out there, most of them which you can decide your own value on. Even Dreamweaver, the program to create/edit every websites, has it’s own poll.

  • Dokter Mandrake

@GfC – From your posts on the site I assume that you lost your shit with glee when the Oscars went back to ten nominees for best picture. I also assume (I am really making an ass of myself) that 90% of Film Junk readers could care less about what is on the polls. Even if Sean includes twenty five, fifty, or a hundred film choices people will still be pissed about a certain film not appearing.

  • GfC: Wow, I had no idea the polls meant this much to you. Either way, I think you were reading something into the tone of my last comment that wasn’t there. I was merely pointing out that what you said was inaccurate, that the plug-in I used for the Reader’s Choice Awards would not be any better for the weekly polls than the widget I’m using already. Otherwise I definitely would have considered switching over.

I’ve said before my stance on the polls, and I’m not trying to be a stubborn asshole, I just don’t think it’s as big of a deal as you do. I’ll admit that having the ability to do 12 or 15 choices for some of the polls might be useful, but too many options would spread out the votes way too thin. Giving people the option to type in their own picks would spread out the voting even more, plus we’d also have to worry about people writing smart ass answers to be funny, etc. On the other hand, if I added extra choices to the poll myself based on people’s suggestions, it would throw off the voting because some people might have voted before certain options got added.

So basically, I have given it some thought, and I think that the way the polls work right now are not perfect, but they are good enough. Clearly the option is there for people to disagree with the choices in the comments or to suggest other alternatives, and I think that discussion is more valuable than the results of the poll itself. It’s not like our weekly polls are being used to hand out awards or decide how certain genres should be remembered from now until the end of time. They are just an excuse for some fun discussion.

  • I say use the boards as write in vote area: POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

I write in: COOKING WITH JERRY!!!!!

  • Strand0410

    Toy Story 3 wherever possible

    Jackass 3D for comedy

Drama was fairly week this year, went with Social Network.

    Inception for SciFi/Fantasy

    The Town – Thriller

    Tron Legacy – Most anticipated

  • GfC

    @Sean

It’s ridiculious how you mention the three options there is, and decide to quickly skip over the best one and focus on the other 2 bad ones, just to make it look like your right:

    >>”I’ll admit that having the ability to do 12 or 15 choices for some of the polls might be useful, but too many options would spread out the votes way too thin.”

Oh, so 2 or 5 more films makes it thinner? Doesn’t matter whether its 20 or even 30 choices. If the movies we want to be there isn’t there, something should be done about it. I am pretty sure the overwhelmingly majority of the people in here wouldn’t mind more options to vote for in the weekly polls.

  • GfC

And based on the numbers of complaints, the polls results don’t make sense, since many people are forced to vote on their first, second or third choice.

  • Mark in Ottawa

    Hey guys,

How about another category – Favorite Podcast Contributor ?

  • Goon

With all the work Sean puts into this site its kind of lousy to see him get raked over the coals over of all things… poll minutiae

  • GfC

I was wondering when you were showing up Goon, going all ”Filmjunk is great, dont mess with them”, as you always do.

I’m just asking for one little adjustment on the polls, it hardly takes any work to do it.

  • Goon

In that case we should put up a poll about whether or not you’re overreacting. I hope there’s at least 10 choices.

  • Film Ape

Film Junk is great, don’t mess with them.

  • Calvin

“Even Dreamweaver, the program to create/edit every websites”

LOL, Sean you should really listen to this expert advice!

  • KeithTalent

Boy, thriller was tough for me between Shutter Island and Black Swan (same with movie of the year). Everything else was pretty easy.

Exit Through The Gift Shop was a no-brainer in documentary for me and I’m probably the only one who picked Easy A for best comedy, but I thought it was pretty awesome, particularly when you consider the competition.

Anyway, Film Junk is great, don’t mess with them, or their poles.

  • Smark

    GfC loves his polls huh.

Go sit on a poll pal. No one cares.

  • Doesn’t every poll FJ uses have only 10 options?

Regardless, please stop feeding the troll.
