The Wachowskis Working on Modern Day Robin Hood Adaptation

Over the past year or so, we’ve been hearing reports that Andy and Lana Wachowski are hard at work on their follow-up to Speed Racer, a top secret Iraqi war movie called CN-9 (short for “Cobalt Neural 9″). It is sounding like it will be a complete 180 from the light tone of Speed Racer, as the story reportedly involves a homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi man and a plot to assassinate George W. Bush. While they continue to remain tight-lipped about this film, this week we have learned that the Wachowskis are also developing another project right now that may offer a new take on Robin Hood. What’s more, Will Smith may potentially be involved.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new movie is tentatively titled Hood, and it will be a “modern, urban take on the Robin Hood myth.” They have apparently written the script and also plan to direct it themselves. The project is currently being set up at Warner Brothers, and I think we can probably assume their buddy Joel Silver is taking on some sort of producer role.
Not much is known about the project, but they have apparently reached out to Will Smith for a role in the film. Could he join Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner as the latest Hollywood star to steal from the rich and give to the poor? I’m certainly curious to see what a modern take on Robin Hood would be like, although I can see a lot of potential for disaster here too. Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood just came out earlier this year, but hey, that’s never stopped Hollywood before. Are you a fan of The Wachowskis’ work? Do either of these far out projects sound promising to you, or are they just losing their minds?
