Monday Morning Box Office Report: Harry Potter Hangs On to Top Tangled

Disney’s Tangled really gave Harry Potter a run for his money over the Thanksgiving weekend, as the animated film just narrowly missed out on topping the box office but still managed to earn the second highest Thanksgiving opening ever with $69 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 dropped a massive 60% from its first weekend but still remained on top, while everything else trailed far behind. Burlesque had a disappointing $17.2 million opening, good enough for the #4 spot, while both Love and Other Drugs and Faster flat out bombed, opening outside of the top 5. Faster, in particular, had the weakest opening weekend for a Dwayne Johnson movie ever. Was it poor marketing or were crowded multiplexes to blame?

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 — $76.3M
2. Tangled — $69M

4. Burlesque — $17.2M
5. Unstoppable — $16.2M
6. Love and Other Drugs — $14M

8. Due Date — $10.2M

Faster’s poor box office performance was not due to bad marketing or the competition. Maybe if the film were released in the dead zone (Jan-Feb) it might have done somewhat better. But I think the gig is up in terms of Dwayne Johnson’s box office appeal. I was a big of him as the Rock and eagerly awaited his turn to movies. At first his stuff was OK, typical dumb action stuff, but he showed potential and I think people were intrigued more by the potential than what actually has come out. His most recent movies have been lackluster at best. He got sidetracked onto the kiddie movies. It’s too early in his career for that. Maybe he saw what Arnold did and figured he needs a mix of hard action and kid stuff. But I think it just confuses the public as to what kind of star he is. If he wants to try to kickstart things again then perhaps Faster was not the movie for that. But maybe it’s a necessary step. His next 2 or 3 movies will show if he actually has it. But I have my doubts from what I’m hearing he has in the works.
