Jeremy Renner Tapped to Take Over Mission: Impossible Series

Jeremy Renner continues to climb Hollywood’s list of rising stars this year as he’s gained a spot on The Avengers team and will be joining Tom Cruise and company in the latest Mission: Impossible adventure. Now, for the actor’s latest achievement, we learn that Renner’s Mission: Impossible days may span well past the fourth film in the series, currently titled Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Even back when Renner was first cast alongside Tom Cruise, some people speculated that he might be positioned to take over the reins of the franchise. Now, in an interview with MTV, Renner has confirmed that that’s exactly the case:

“It’s a franchise to potentially take over,” he said. “I can’t predict the future and what they want, but that’s certainly the idea.” So, depending on how well the next installment fairs at the box office, we may very well see Renner in charge of future missions… that are impossible.

While this news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, I’ll be curious to see how people react to it. The Mission: Impossible series has always come across as a vehicle for Tom Cruise more than anything else, so to take him out of the equation might be a tricky proposition. On one hand, Cruise’s popularity has dwindled over the past few years, so his eventual absence might not make that much difference. On the other hand, I think Cruise still carries enough star power that not having him around could make for a tough sell. What are your thoughts on this news? Is Jeremy Renner a worthy choice to take over the series? Can the franchise still prosper without Tom Cruise?

I think that Tom Cruise has made the role his over the years, for better or for worse. I think Jeremy Renner could step in but it’s questionable if he could bring in MORE money then Tom Cruise could, in that particular franchise, especially since people are used to having Tom Cruise in that role.

Tom Cruise may not be as popular now as he once was, but his name still carries a lot of weight. He was the star of a lot of my favorite movies and I know he made some mistakes in the last few years but everyone does.

I am a guy and I consider myself a fairly big fan of his and I know there are a ton of women that feel that he is God’s gift, so I’m not exactly worried about his fame dwindling into non-existence anytime soon.

If anyone could fill his shoes I think it would be Jeremy Renner, more so then anyone else, at the moment.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Renner taking over. I wouldn’t mind seeing Mission Impossible become a series like the Bond films.

They should have kept this a secret…top top secret…and then have Cruise DIE in the last minutes of the new Mission impossible movie

    Can you imagine

That WOULD have been a very good idea, but the cat’s out of the bag now, for those select people that read up on films and that film, in particular. Then again, half the people that go see a movie don’t bother to read about it first, or research, so a lot of people would probably still be in for a shock or a surprise.
