Jim Carrey Says The Three Stooges Movie is Dead

Last year The Farrelly Brothers unveiled ambitious plans for a dream project of theirs that had been sitting in development hell for a long time: a new Three Stooges movie that would star Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio Del Toro as Moe and Jim Carrey as Curly. The project hit a big snag a few months later after Sean Penn announced he would be taking a year off from acting, potentially forcing him to relinquish the role to someone else. Although Penn was later rumoured to be back on board, we haven’t heard any official word since then and The Farrellys have continued to soldier on with new movies (ie. Hall Pass). Last week MTV caught up with Jim Carrey, who gave an update on the project that doesn’t sound very promising:

“I think it’s dead. It’s dead at least with me… I don’t really want to do anything halfway, and I don’t feel like a fat suit does it. I started experimenting with it a little bit, and I gained 35, 40 pounds. I wanted to gain another 30, 40. When you’re [Robert] De Niro in your 20s or early 30s, you can kind of come back from that. It’s a tough thing to come back from when you’re upwards of 30. Your body can’t carry it or you can have a cardiac arrest. Put that with Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro slapping me in the head all day long, and someone will lose an eye. It won’t be good. It’ll be like Midnight Express. It’ll be awful.”

It’s unclear if Carrey would still be obligated to do the movie if it did shift back into production, but alas it doesn’t sound too likely. Without Jim Carrey on board, the movie would lose a huge part of its mainstream comedic appeal as well, but I think I have a solution. Why bother with fat suits and weight gain when you can just get Kevin James? Seriously though, I think it’s a sign that a new Three Stooges movie is probably not meant to be. Are you glad to see this project once again fade away, or did you think it had potential?
