Battle: Los Angeles Trailer

As we all know by now, Skyline is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the massive wave of alien invasion movies headed our way over the next year or so. The first full trailer for Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles has debuted online today, and I assume it will also be playing with Skyline over the weekend. This is a movie we started hearing a lot about at Comic-Con this year, and much like Skyline, it is selling itself more based on the concept and the special effects than the stars. Of course, The Strause Brothers also did the visual FX work for Battle: Los Angeles, which could explain some of the similarities between the two, and also prompted Sony to contemplate legal action against them.

From the first trailer it’s clear that Battle: Los Angeles has a slightly bigger budget than Skyline, although they still seem to be holding some of their cards close to their chest in terms of revealing all the special effects money shots. This trailer tries to make an impression based on mystery and tone, choosing an interesting vocoder-driven song to carry it (Johann Johannsson’s “Sun’s Gone Dim”). Strangely, the movie may still undergo a title change before the release date as IMDb now has it listed as “World Invasion: Battle LA”. Either way, it hits theatres on March 11th. What do you think… will this be better than Skyline? Can any of these low budget alien invasion flicks top Cloverfield or District 9? Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    Looks bad-ass with a capital B-A!!

  • kyri

    Wow, this looks REAAAAALLLY good,

    No Low budget at all.

  • FoxMulder

Definitely like the setting!! Looks very interesting (more than Skyline). Lots of battles coming up with Peter Berg’s Battleship (2012)!

  • Rusty

Wow. That is a really good trailer, I wonder if Sony did this just to take the wind out of Skyline’s sails this weekend?

  • Fatbologna

Considering the word is that Skyline’s putrid, I don’t think these guys ever had anything to worry about. This looks great!

  • Berserker

I hope this is not another Iraq war analogy. “This time we are the insurgents” type of movie.

  • Phil

The song sets an amazing and interesting tone, because it would be sad if we had to fight for our lives, etc…

Aliens are the ultimate movie villain, for sure; room for plenty more invasion movies.

Maybe the zombie thing can die down and we can have a UFO craze for a while

  • Marc

This trailer gave the same feeling that I got when I first saw the trailers to both Cloverfield and District 9. That said I think Sony could have a sleeper hit on their hands in the same vein as those two films.

By the way Skyline sucked hard and I doubt this will. I can’t wait for 03.11.11

  • Phil

Also, are the aliens using conventional explosives? That’s really interesting to see aliens using rockets and grenades…we’re so used to seeing lasers it’s almost hard to imagine movie aliens using anything different

  • Very impressed by that trailer. I wasn’t expecting much but I’ll certainly be checking it out when it hits cinemas.

  • Napalm

Looks a thousand times better than Skyline. But goddamn they are typecasting the shit out of Michelle Rodriguez.

  • swarez

Trouble is that Michelle Rodriguez is that way in real life. Butch as hell, but hot as shit as well.
Love this trailer by the way. Great use of the song and creates a fantastic atmosphere.

  • Kurei

This looks good, if a bit predictable. Best not to say predictable, but I can see where its going. Seems its going along the lines of disaster/war movie though. Hopefully I’m wrong, not that it would be a bad thing, but just to shake things up a bit. I thought District 9 would offer a more cerebral experience, but instead it just skimmed over things and went for the money shots in the end. But I am grateful it didn’t turn out like that pretentious Primer.

One of the few movies I will be looking forward to next year, for a theatre experience.

Iraq analogy all the way. Water for fuel, drones, sufficiently advanced technology, massive invasion followed by an (expedited due to the fact that its a movie “insurgency”) Basically, hey America, if someone equally more advanced than you were than Iraq attacked you, this is what would happen. Rubbish
