First Look at Chris Evans as Captain America (Updated)

Update: As promised, a higher resolution version of the image has been added after the jump.

Update #2: Four more images added!

A couple of months ago, the costume designs for Captain America leaked online, providing plenty of fodder for fanboy debate. Since then we haven’t heard all that much about the movie, until this week. It looks like Marvel is finally ready to show something, and Cap is the cover story for the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. They’ve got a shot of Evans wearing the costume (sans mask) right there on the front.

The article also has interviews with Evans and director Joe Johnston, who gave them the following quote:

“The interesting thing about this character is that he’s an everyman who in the course of a few minutes become a perfect human specimen. That has to create some interesting personal issues… I saw it as an opportunity to make a superhero movie that felt real, that didn’t have to rely on an overabundance of fantasy elements.”

At the moment, this low-res cover shot is all we have, but I’m sure it will be more than enough to spark some discussion. I’ll add more pics and a higher resolution version if they become available. What do you think, is this the Steve Rogers you were hoping for? Captain America: The First Avenger hits theatres on July 22nd.

Looks like he is wearing suspenders; can’t say I’m a huge fan. Also, his head is too small.

  • kyri

    His head is fine..
    The whole idea is stupid..

  • So far so good.

  • rob

didnt like the concept art, however this looks pretty awesome

  • Brugal

Why? isn’t he the Human torch in Fantastic 4, why also put him as captain America…..bad idea

  • Berserker

Looks really good. I have high hopes for this.

@Brugal – Aren’t they rebooting Fantastic Four? Also: Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool, and Green Lantern, and Deadpool again, and he was in Blade: Trinitiy. I see no problem. And: Michael Chiklis is the Thing in Fantastic Four, but he plays another superheroish figure on No Ordinary Family (Excellent show on the whole Superhero conventions). Still see no problem.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that he was the right choice…

I’m a big fan of Chris Evans and I think he will do a bang up job. So far I love the direction they are going with this and the costume looks aces.
But haters got to hate I suppose.

  • Niklas

Why can’t an actor play two different super heroes? Its just another role.

  • Steve

I love Chris Evans but it just looks stupid. The WWII look is fairly decent, but the actual final get-up just looks ridiculous. It looks like he’s wearing a full-denim outfit with a parachuting harness.

Let’s hope that with The Avengers, they update the costume to be more… stylish.

  • swarez

The cover photo is the WW2 look silly billy.
