Christopher Nolan Reveals Third Batman Movie Title and Eliminates One Potential Villain

Well there’s still a lot we don’t know about Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie right now, but the good news is, we no longer have to refer to it as “The Dark Knight sequel” or “Batman 3″. In an interview with Hero Complex, he unveiled the new title for the film, and it is… The Dark Knight Rises. Let the speculation begin. If you ask me, it almost seems to imply that Batman will die and then come back from the grave. The other intriguing tidbit that Nolan offered up is the fact that, contrary to speculation, the villain will not be The Riddler. So who will it be?

Nolan was not yet ready to reveal the identity of the new movie’s main villain, but he did say that “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.” So clearly it’s either a pre-existing character or a brand new one… which, you know, doesn’t really narrow it down. At all.

Personally I’m kind of glad to hear that they won’t go The Riddler route, just because I still think he’s a bit too similar to The Joker and it seemed a bit too typical and comic book-y to just bring another deranged weirdo out of the woodwork. But I know everyone thinks it’s the only other potential Batman villain that would work in the real world. So who else is left? What do you say, people… who will Batman go up against in The Dark Knight Rises?

I’m so glad it won’t be in 3D.

  • I still think they could do Catwoman. She is a jewel thief. She steals something from the mob and they go after her and Batman is torn on whether he should intervene or not. Although I still say a Zodiac Killer type of spin on The Riddler could have done fantastically.

    List of villains here…

My 2 pence, Bane and Deadshot. Deadshot hired by Harley Quinn maybe? And Two Face will obviously be in it.

I don’t think the title implies the death of Batman. If you think about it, at the end of The Dark Knight Batman is on the run, a fugitive of the law. The Dark Knight Rises likely means his rise back to the top of Gotham, and once again a hero of the city.

  • Rick

how can they do harley quinn. she was never mentioned in the movie. please no two face

  • pcch7

I´m guessing Two-Face will be back.. I always thought “The Dark Knight” could refer to both him and Batman.. Hardy as Hugo Strange?

  • Napalm

i think most fanboys wanted The Riddler because of Gordon Levitt, and also because of the Joker factor. but i’m kind of glad that they didn’t go for that. earlier Killer Croc’s name was brought up but i dont see him fitting in the Nolanverse. guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I am hoping for Clayface and Victor Zsasz as a second Villain

I know ClayFace can look silly on the big screen but I really like his background story and you know what? before Jurassic park Dinosaurs looked stupid also..

If Anything else, it can be a challenge.. For any visionary director..

  • Rick

and point of order, didnt christopher nolan go on record saying “two face is dead”

  • rjdelight

    Yep. Two Face is done.

  • Mark In Ottawa

Or the fact that he rises from the depths of his pain over the loss of Rachel to fight crime again.

    Helen Mirren will play Catwoman.

    Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the riddler.

Reed Farrington as The Cluemaster …..

I know that Nolan lives and dies by realism in many of his movies and I have no issues with that, but for this next movie I want to see more of Batman as an actual detective and a strategist, not just as a rich guy with a lot of money and a mission.

In the comics Batman has files on everyone, friend or foe, and he is always two steps ahead of everyone else. He always has a contingency plan or a back-up in place in case the worst scenario happens.

I want to see a villain that I might see in the real world and I want it to be a villain that would actually scare the pants off of me if I met him while walking in my neighborhood. The Joker was good as a bad guy but half the time he was busy struggling with his own psychosis and inner turmoil. I want to see someone on screen that has their shit together, just like Bruce Wayne and they are able to compete with him on the same level, at least intellectually, if not financially.

Show me someone that is actually a real threat to Bruce Wayne and the people around him. Scare me a little bit.

Give me a villain that is just purely mean and motivated to do harm and make me believe that motivation behind his onscreen actions. If Joker was chaos then let’s see Nolan’s version of order and steel-minded determination and stubborness in a villain.

If I want something very badly then I know that I am going to do whatever it takes to get it, no matter what obstacles I might encounter, and that is the type of villain that I would like to see.

Mr. Nolan, please impress me, again.

This all depends on how dark they want to get with the character of Batman in the inevitable descent he will have taken given the events at the end of The Dark Knight. I mean Killer Croc could be an effective bad guy even or Man Bat or maybe Dent ain’t dead.

  • Gil

    Azrael.

  • Duke Togo

Anarky, Ratcatcher, Cornelius Stirk, Ventriloquist, Zsasz, pretty much any of Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle’s villains during their run on Detective, Batman and Shadow of the Bat.

  • Jonny Ashley

The title seems to advertise a fourth film (The Dark Knight Falls), but I don’t know if that’s what he’s setting up.
The title strikes Bane out of the picture. The Bane “Knightfall” arc takes place during a time when Batman isn’t rising. Batman’s at the top already, and Bane breaks his back and brings him down, hence Knightfall, hence it can’t be The Dark Knight Rises and still have Bane in it. If they have a fourth film, it might definitely have Bane in it.

  • rjdelight

    @ Jonny Ashley

The Dark Knight already fell in “The Dark Knight”. And no, I don’t think we’ll be getting a fourth Batman flick from Nolan. It’s a trilogy, and a mighty fine one at that. That’s assuming the third is as good as the previous two and he doesn’t pull a Godfather 3.

  • matt

I could see the Black Mask working in the nolan-verse. He’s not too over the top and he could work in a real world setting.

  • Derek

    Black Mask, Catwoman, and Deadshot.

  • Nelsn Smith

I did some reading up on “Black Mask” and I definitely think he would make a cool villain for the new movie, if done right. I am very interested in what Nolan will do with this AND what is going to be done as far as the new Superman movie.

  • Jesse

Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin

  • Steve

Catwoman (Emily Blunt) or The Penguin (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Ivy, Freeze, Croc etc were a bit too cartoony.

  • Alex

Ra’s al Ghoul would be cool.

  • David

Andy Serkis as Penguin would have been excellent. Otherwise they’ve exhausted all possible interesting villains for Nolan’s Batman universe.

  • TheAllKnowingGod

Time to bring the FUN back to Batman. Bring in Mr. Freeze. That would be cool.

  • Frenchy

I seriously do hope that Riddler would become a villian. Nolan is taking a darker, realistic and disturbing approach to Batman and who wouldnt be any more realistic, dark and disturbing than Riddler, who is a criminal mastermind. He makes the kills, and actually writes notes and clues to lead police to the body and scene of the crime.

So, who wouldnt be any better than to cast Johnny Depp? Imean Depp can do ANY roll, and his personality and look would fit Riddler PERFECTLY.

  • Kyle

I think alot of people need to realize, that Christopher Nolan isn’t your run of the mill Director. Whom purely makes a movie for the cash. He really wants you to be engulfed in the world that is the Dark Knight. His realistic spin on the Batman movies which to me is refreshing. If your were old enough to remember the really flambouent Batmans 3 and 4 of the 90’s.

The Dark grittiness of these movies unveils that being a Hero isn’t always about doing the right thing or that justice prevails all the time. So the list of characters I see here are either drenched in past flops or doesn’t really make any sense to the script of the past movies.

Also Christopher Nolan had said that Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and the Joker will not be coming back. To be honest to even try to bring th Joker back is such an insult to Ledger and the whole Franchise. He set a standard, and to even copy cat that would be such shit. Jeez why don’t people think alittle bit.

As well the Whole batman comics started in 1939 in Detective Comies #27. I’m sure from that point till now there is an incalculable amount of villains and more interesting to fit Christopher Nolan’s bill.
