Monday Morning Box Office Report: Paranormal Activity 2 Makes a Killing

Well I think it’s safe to say that Paranormal Activity has successfully established itself as a quote-unquote horror “franchise”, with the sequel taking $41 million — nearly double what the original movie made in its first weekend of wide release. The folks over at Box Office Mojo are calling it the “highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a supernatural horror movie”, and it could conceivably surpass the original, although that movie built slowly over time while this one may burn out early. What are the odds we’ll get a part 3? Audiences weren’t quite as fired up about Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, however, which hit the #4 slot with just $12 million. Jackass 3D stayed strong at #2 with another $21.6 million, followed by Red with $15 million. The Social Network rounded out the top 5. I’m intrigued to see what happens next weekend when Paranormal Activity 2 goes head-to-head with Saw 3D. Any predictions?

1. Paranormal Activity 2 — $41.5M
2. Jackass 3D — $21.6M
3. Red — $15M
4. Hereafter — $12M
5. The Social Network — $7.3M
6. Secretariat — $6.92M
7. Life as We Know It — $6.15M
8. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole — $3.17M
9. The Town — $2.72M
10. Easy A — $1.75M

I loved the first and I hear from just about every site I go to that the second is just as good. I’m a bit disappointed that you guys didn’t review PA2 for the podcast this week. I seem to remember you guys all enjoyed the last year. Will you be reviewing it for next week’s podcast maybe?

    >>”Well I think it’s safe to say that Paranormal Activity has successfully established itself as a quote-unquote”

What does that mean? I know people say quote and then unquote when they have something to say in a speech. But never in writing.

No, they didn’t. It wasn’t a long time ago, even you should have remember. Jay certainly didn’t enjoy the film, and Sean liked it, but didn’t think it was great. I’m not sure about Greg though, but i think it was right in the middle in his opinion.

  • I think I was the only one who really liked the first Paranormal Activity, and I liked it quite a bit. Which is I guess why I seem to be the only one interested in seeing the sequel.

I saw PA2 this weekend and its just as good as PA1 so if you liked that you will like this one as well. I guess the only thing that might take away from the sequel is that it doesn’t branch out much. The way they tied it into the first one was awesome though.

  • Saw Paranormal Activity 2 on Friday night and I was blown away. This movie answers the questions left unanswered in the first…..what happened to Katie, what was going on in Katie’s family and why were they being stalked by a demon. The scares were genuine, scream worthy, and very disturbing. I thought the cast did an excellent job and the entire movie from start to finish was a genuine horror movie buff treat. It does not rely on blood and guts to scare you (never been scared by that crap anyway) It was the menacing feel, the knowledge that something unseen was after this family and meant business. It scared me and left me not a little jittery after. Definitely worth the 10.00 ticket price and I can’t wait to buy it on DVD!!!! A sequel surpasses it’s original, but I believe Paranormal Activity 2 did just that. Great job guys, You scared the hell out of me. I don’t know about other audiences, but the one I was with bounced between nervous laughter to out and out screams and we all left the theater with chills. I needed a glass of wine to settle my frazzled nerves when I got home!!!
