James Cameron Wants Louis Leterrier To Direct Fantastic Voyage

You may recall that, aside from working on Avatar sequels, James Cameron has also been developing a remake of Fantastic Voyage. Since Cameron himself won’t be directing, the search for someone to head up the production has certainly had its share of speculation. At one time or another, directors like Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass, and Timur Bekmambetov have met with Cameron on the project. Now word has surfaced that Cameron has chosen the man he wants for the job: Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk). While this isn’t confirmation of Leterrier’s involvement, it’s the first solid news we’ve heard on the remake for awhile.
For those unfamiliar with the original, Fantastic Voyage tells the story of a team of scientists who are shrunk down in a ship and inserted into a colleague’s body in order to repair an otherwise deadly blood clot. A huge budget is planned for the film, which will be in 3-D. In typical Cameron fashion, essentially once the scientists are shrunk down almost everything will be CG, allowing his creative team the chance to show off their latest effects. If everything falls into place, the film could be ready to shoot in early 2011.
While most audiences weren’t fans of Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans remake (especially its 3-D conversion), with Cameron’s tech team behind the scenes I wonder how people will react to this choice. While his previous work might invite the term “jobber”, I think if the right script came along Leterrier could deliver a solid film. What do you think? Is Leterrier a good choice for this material?
