    NO Jay?

    NO Greg????

    and most of all

    NO REED???

    THis Sucks.

  • Goon is such a giant douche. I disagree with just about anything he says. Still a good show though, at least Frank talks some sense.

  • Uh oh… a UFC fan. ;)

  • Goon

    I have it coming.

  • Rolf

Don’t be so harsh, folks, at least there is still a filmjunk podcast. I have seen so many podcasts which were suddenly gone. So hail to the Sean! Keep it up even without your regular co-hosts. :)

  • bard

Good episode. I like both Goon and Frank quite a bit actually.

Looking forward to the next Game Junk episode.

  • rjdelight

Kasper, I couldn’t agree more. It also sounded like he was doing the show from underwater. Why do you guys insist on using Skype?

  • Mark In Ottawa

Whoever wrote that first one needs to calm down.

Can we have a podcast with Frank and Reed ? I have the feeling they’re the same person …..

Jay, however, was missed. Is he doing Kevin Smith style spoken word stuff now ? Is Greg his Malcolm Ingram ?

Sean is still the shit. As long as you have him steering the show you’re in for a good epiosode.

  • We insist on using Skype because that is the only way to get certain people on the show. Plenty of podcasts use it, I don’t think we’re particularly unique in this. Maybe we’re not as adept at optimizing the sound quality yet, but we’ll continue to work on improving it. I thought it sounded pretty clear this time around, just a little bass-y.

  • Gil

I’ll take Goon over that retarded douche Kurt from Row Three. Every time he talks it’s verbal rape.

  • Guys, I just want to make it clear that when we have guests on the show, they are doing us (and YOU) a favour. We invite them on because they are friends of ours who like to talk movies and we enjoy their company and think that you will too. Obviously not everyone out there is going to love every guest, and they have a difficult task of trying to live up to the usual line-up that you are all used to. Personally I think it keeps things fresh to change it up every now and then. But the bottom line is that without them THERE WOULD NOT BE A SHOW EVERY WEEK. So can we please hold back on hurling the insults, they are all good people and don’t deserve it. Thanks.

  • Mark In Ottawa

  • Gil

Dammit Sean! You’re right. I apologize for my hateful and distasteful comment. Truth is, I don’t really hate Kurt. I think I’ve just been out-Kurted with about 6 hours of Row Three Cinecast – insomnia sucks balls.
Again, all apologies to both you and Kurt should he read this.

  • Thanks Gil.

  • bard

I’m glad Sean stood up for the guys. There hasn’t been a single guest appearance on Film Junk that I didn’t enjoy. Of course, I have my favorite guests, but they’re all enjoyable and I’m glad they take the time to do a FREE show.

  • Greg

    Greg sucks.

  • Brendan

Sean, I agree about Skype. I’ve heard it used on many podcasts, even when the quality “Skypes out,” which didn’t happen at all with Goon.
However, I think some shows use Skype so they can communicate, but each person also records their own audio on their own pc and sends it to whoever to mix the whole thing together, so you get better audio quality. Of course that requires a lot of extra time and effort (especially if there are sync issues).
As far as this weeks content and guests, I do appreciate that the podcast was recorded despite the missing pieces, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say most people enjoy the show because of the hosts and their individual opinions & personalities. When two-thirds of that dynamic is gone, it’s hard not to be disappointed. I found myself fast-forwarding a lot this week. No offense to the guest hosts, but “it is what it is.”

  • Film Ape

Most podcasts don’t have regular hosts as good as the guests on the Film Junk podcast.

  • Film Ape

Goon did you like American Werewolf in London?

  • Goon

FA, yes, I went and got the blu Ray the next day.

  • Goon

…and Brendan, I completely understand where you’re coming from.

  • Just to be on the safe side, I have nothing against Goons appearance on the podcast (like I mention, it’s still a good show). I am just pointing out that he’s a douche and I disagree with him on more or less every subject :P

The only reason why I prefer Goon not to be on too often as a guest, as opposed to Frank or Reed, is that he’s not recording at Seans place, and by that extension using Skype, and the sound quality is just so horrid. It’s becoming better, but it’s still really annoying. One of the major plus points for FilmJunk usually is the fact that it’s all recorded properly, and it was what attracted me to the show to begin with – along with the great cast of personalities ofcourse.

But a little Goon every now and then is fine, just not too often, it also makes my blood preasure dangerously high.

  • For the record, A Serbian Film is an extremely dull piece of wannabe-shocking cinema.

Nothing happens for the first 45 minutes, and it relies more on the concepts to shock than anything it films (i.e. you don’t actually see any penetration of the newborn. Sorry, guys). Irreversible does it much better.

The characters aren’t very interesting and seemed used as just things to follow until it can introduce the “horrors”; a story exists, but is there just to noticeably build up to the “hardcore” scenes; and the cinematography is like a sepia-tone-soaked student film: The browns are supposed to represent significance and meaning.

  • Also, I’ll throw in some love for Goon and Frank–Frank has such an infectious happiness that you can’t help but like it, and Goon can make a sly comment on anything.

Maybe the thing to do for the 300th podcast is get all the guests–Goon, Frank, Singe, Doug Nagy, Alicia, and so on–to do a show.

Also, the pronunciation for our surname is “el-mur-el.”

  • kyri

@Nat Almirall so.. you are saying A Serbian Film was not Hardcore enough for you?

I am not saying is a good film But I Still think is a very disturbing visceral experience..

And for the Record your avatar is also sepia-tone-soaked..

  • @kyri I don’t think it’s as hardcore as everyone thinks. And not a good film, either.

  • Film Ape

How does American Werewolf in London look on blu-ray? I seem to remember the DVD print not being that great, but it has been a while since I watched it.

  • kyri

It looks Awesome. Huge improvment over the old Dvd print.

The film is overall more bright and the colors are also more vivid.

There is some grain but overall I think is a must have blue ray.

  • Goon

I havent popped the blu-ray in since i got it actually.

Frank is indeed infectiously happy, I only met him in public for the first time at the start of September, I’m on the patio of the Sound Academy on the Toronto docks, and I just hear “GOON!!” shouted and I knew it was him right away. Good times on the patio as we avoided a lackluster opener for the Scissor Sisters. Great dude.

  • Henrik

Goon used to piss me off years ago too, but I’ve learned to accept him, and even grown to appreciate him. So give it time peeps, not even skype can hold back the lovetrain that is FilmJunk.

  • Henrik

Frank is the as close to “:D” as you’re even going to get in a real-life person.

  • Aaron

Another great show. That bit on Crocodile Dundee was pretty priceless.

  • Berserker

With 2/3 of the cast missing, you guys pulled off a pretty good show. For fill-in hosts, I recommend, in this order: 1. Reed 2. Frank 3. Corey.

Your review of Red was dead on. That movie was shit.

  • Frank on Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2 is an instant classic. Thought the show was very good as a whole; both guests provided suave voices, thoughtful chatter and plenty of chuckles.

Lord Byron was the icing on the cake.

  • Frank

I agree with Maxime, all this talk about guest hosts has completely taken away what should have been the focus of this show…. Lord Byron

  • pcch7

“Most podcasts don’t have regular hosts as good as the guests on the Film Junk podcast.”

INDEED. I love these guysm the only one that can be annoying is Reed but god damnit he´s entertaining too.

Frank is awesome, he has to be on more often. And definitely for ep 300, him and Singe.

  • Falsk

If I can jump on the Skype bandwagon for a quick second…

Does anyone (re: Sean) know why some shows sound fine and others, like this week, atrocious? It doesn’t really matter in the long run, but it’s really confusing. Goon’s been on before and it never sound so effing bass-y. I can’t hear a thing he says in my car… everyone’s laughing and having a good time at his jokes… and all I hear is “Mrffdrrffgrrff”. Ah well…

  • It depends on a lot of things… the mics being used on the other end, the internet connection, and also where you’re listening to it and what your audio set up is like. We have headphones when we do the show so I think that made it easier to hear, but I didn’t realize until after we recorded it how much bass there was.

  • kyri

damn it sean why comments with links always disappear man?

How are we supposed to recommended southpark episodes?

Sean, Goon keep up the good work. I just started with the podcasts, even though I have visited the site a little over year now. I started with ep 250, (looking forward to another best of show) and have been jumping around the episode list while at work. Comedy Gold. screw the nay-sayers
I am also a fellow Canuck.
    Cheers fellas.

  • Goon

as much as I shat all over South Park, I particularly regard “Scott Tenorman Must Die”, its as good as any animated episode from any animated series. I’d also say of all SP episodes its the most rewatchable too.

  • Mark In Ottawa

    Re: #16.

    Yeah man, he’s a twat.

  • KeithTalent

I can;t believe people bash the guests; I like all of them, they all bring something different to the table.

Anyway, very disappointing to hear about Red, was looking forward to seeing it. Guess I’ll wait for rental.

As for the Dragon Tattoo films, I definitely agree the second film was weaker and I think it was in large part due to the fact the Lisbeth and Blomkvist were barely on screen together. One of the great things of the first film was there interactions and the ambiguity surrounding their relationship, but there was not much of that it in the second film. I hope the final one returns to some of that.

Oh and UFC sucks. May as well just watch some gay BDSM films, all that is missing is the anal penetration.

  • I actually really liked THE SIGNAL. The third part was a little too ethereal but the first and second parts were great. I loved the humor in the second bit.

Also, put me firmly in the FAMILY GUY camp SP is for college kids that think it’s funny when a cartoon is a talking piece of poop. FG aims for the 29-39 year old crowd with equally juvenile humor but with all the pop culture references that are MUCH more creative and obscure. I watch an episode of SP and maybe chuckle a couple of times. I watch FG and find myself belly laughing all the way through – and that is EVERY episode I’ve ever watched; which is almoist all of them up through season 6.

  • Why would you want ANY old movie upgraded to 3D? Depending on how the new TRON movie looks, maybe the original could look cool in 3D.

Did you guys seriously suggest they should go back and ruin Ghostbusters by making me wear sunglasses to watch a crappy, blurry version that vaguely looks like three dimensions?

  • Last thing: first time I’m kind of disappointed in FJ readers. I expect that crap from Henrik, but the rest of you should learn to chill and communicate with some manners. Hiding behind your keyboard and ripping on people you don’t know is easy I guess.

I for one thought Goon and Frank were great guests and the Skype connection was totally listenable. I guess maybe I got my fill of Cheel over the weekend ;)

(saw the colon cancer story live… it was awesome)

  • KeithTalent, yeah I do not understand UFC at all. As a kid I probably would’ve loved it, but for someone who is 35, I just have better things to do than get stoned and watch two guys pummel each other. I guess the 21st Century entertainment isn’t all that different from the first century.

  • KeithTalent

Holy crap, Nightmares! I remember that from when I was a kid, the rat one scared the crap out of me; I always expected this ginormous rodent to be sitting on my bed every time I went to sleep.

Yeah Andrew, I’m the exact same age and feel the exact same way.

  • KeithTalent

Sorry, responding as I listen to everything, but Sean, Martyrs is an amazing movie! I think I posted a mini-review of it on the forums. I thought it was a very impressive film and something I will be re-watching this weekend. There are some rough spots that are kind of reminiscent the Hostel type films, but Martyrs has so much more than those films in my opinion.

Also as I was watching I was finding myself strangely attracted to Lucie, which if you seen the film is kind of nuts, but then I looked her up and she’s smoking hot, so now I don’t feel so bad:
