Zoolander Spawns Animated Web Series

Earlier this year, hopes were high about the possibility of an Anchorman sequel — that is, until news came out that Paramount had essentially passed on the project. Soon afterward, Ben Stiller chimed in via Twitter, hinting that his attempts at getting Zoolander 2 off the ground may have been met with a similar fate. While we still don’t have any new updates on that particular sequel, it looks like Ben Stiller is trying to build momentum up again, this time by bringing back Derek Zoolander in animated form. The character is one of two web series that he will be involved in for Paramount Digital Entertainment.
According to the New York Times, Stiller will voice Zoolander in a series of online shorts, and he hopes to get the rest of the original cast members on board, including Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell. He will also be starring in a live action web series called Billy Glimmer: Entertainer of the Century, where he plays a “mid-level voice impersonator out of Las Vegas.” The series will be directed by directed by Jason Woliner and will co-star Rob Huebel, both of whom worked on Human Giant for MTV.
It’s unclear if the episodes will be available on a pay-per-view basis, but it sounds like they are leaning towards making them free through one of the major online networks such as Hulu or Yahoo!. Stiller seems happy the situation will allow them to finally do something productive with Zoolander, instead of just letting the property get tied up at a studio in endless budget discussions. What do you think, is Zoolander a good fit for an animated web series, and could this help bring get a sequel greenlit?
