Well I don’t think it’s a huge surprise, but apparently someone out there has the inside scoop on who the main villain will be for the upcoming Spider-Man reboot and no, it’s not Venom (not that anyone really thought it would be anyway). A couple of days ago we heard that Rhys Ifans (Greenberg, Pirate Radio) had landed a role as the main villain in the new movie. According to The Wrap, that villain will be Curt Connors aka The Lizard.
You may recall that Dylan Baker played Curt Connors in the previous Spider-Man trilogy, although he never actually got a chance to take center stage as The Lizard in any of the films. There were rumours that he was the planned villain for part 4, but there was never any official confirmation of that fact. Now, sadly, it looks like his role has been handed off to Ifans who will get all the glory instead.
It’s unclear how reliable this information is, but it certainly seems to fit. Director Marc Webb was quoted as saying that Ifan’s “incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.” The Wrap does not give much info on their source, referring to them only as “two individuals familiar with the project.” What do you think… does The Lizard make sense as the first villain for a new Spider-Man saga?
