Guillermo del Toro Offered Director’s Chair on Godzilla Reboot?

Update: HitFix has apparently debunked this rumour with the help of del Toro himself.

Is Guillermo del Toro getting busy yet? Surely, he can handle at least one more addition to his ever expanding list of potential projects. Last we heard, he was heading into pre-production on At the Mountains of Madness, and was hoping to shoot it sometime next summer. But now it looks like he may have another intriguing film being dangled in front of his nose courtesy of the folks at Legendary Pictures. They picked up a sci-fi pitch back in May called Pacific Rim, about a future where malevolent creatures threaten the planet. Now they’re talking about merging the concept with the Godzilla property they recently acquired, and apparently they want del Toro to direct it!

Mixing and matching projects like this may sound ill-advised, but it seems to happen a lot more often in Hollywood than we realize. According to Latino Review, Legendary execs weren’t too happy with the script that was turned in for the Godzilla reboot, but they really liked what they had for Pacific Rim from Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). Slapping a familiar name on the project seems like an easy way to sell it.

It’s still a bit premature to say that Guillermo del Toro will actually be directing a new Godzilla movie. The word on the street is that Legendary has put out an offer to him for Pacific Rim. Not only would he have to accept the offer, but they’d still have to officially decide to rewrite the film to include the giant lizard. Either way, the thought of del Toro taking on some sort of monster movie blockbuster is certainly exciting, it’s just a question of whether or not he has the time.
