Well, shortly after learning about Emma Stone’s casting as Gwen Stacy, another piece of the Spider-Man reboot puzzle has been revealed. Columbia Pictures has announced that Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has been cast in the villain role in the upcoming superhero drama. Ifans, while not a household name, is still a highly recognizable face, appearing in Notting Hill, Pirate Radio, Greenberg, and the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. At this time, the identity of the villain will be kept a mystery, which makes sense from a publicity point of view. Now fans will have a period of wild speculation, building up even more hype for the film.
While there haven’t been any real clues as to who Ifans will play, perhaps people can have some fun guessing based on director Marc Webb’s quote on the casting: “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.” (Okay, so that doesn’t really help, does it?) The inclusion of Ifans seems like an interesting choice and not one that I would have expected. From the films I’ve seen with him, he’s left an good impression and I’ll look forward to watching him here as well. What are your thoughts on the latest Spider-Man casting? Do you have any guesses as to who the villain will be? Shooting will begin in December for an eventual release on July 3, 2012.
