Danny Boyle Still Wants to Direct 28 Days Later Sequel

With Halloween just around the corner, it seems that everyone has horror movies on the mind, and as luck would have it we’ve got an intriguing update this week on a sequel to one of the more popular recent horror franchises. We’ve been hearing for a few years now that there would be a third movie in the 28 Days Later / 28 Weeks Later post-apocalyptic zombie series, and at one point Danny Boyle himself said he would be interested in returning to direct. Although the sequel was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Boyle apparently did some second unit work on the film, and had a great time doing it. Although there was a report a while back that Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage) would be taking over the franchise instead, this week it seems that Boyle is once again expressing interest in helming the proposed 28 Months Later. Sounds great, but will it actually happen?

According to Dread Central, they have a source who recently spoke to Boyle (I’m assuming as part of the press for 127 Hours) and he said that there would indeed be a sequel to 28 Weeks Later. When asked if Boyle would be producing, he replied that he wants to direct it. It all sounds a little bit sketchy, to be sure, but the truth is he doesn’t have anything else immediately lined up to direct. It would definitely be a nice change of pace after Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Unfortunately, screenwriter Alex Garland was quoted last week as saying that the rights to the 28 Days Later franchise are all tied up right now, which means a movie might not happen anyway. Can you see Oscar winner Danny Boyle returning to do another zombie flick at this point in his career?

Can’t wait for “28 Years Later”. And the inevitable “28 Decades Later”, followed by “28 Centuries Later”.
