James Cameron Bringing True Lies to the Small Screen

Surprise, surprise… yet another classic Arnold Schwarzenegger flick is about to get a remake, albeit in a different medium. In this case, the 1994 action comedy True Lies is about to get turned into a TV series, and I think it’s pretty obvious why. We’ve seen a pair of movies this summer that riffed on the same concept (Knight & Day and Killers), and this month the new J.J. Abrams show Undercovers also features a husband and wife engaging in espionage-related hijinks. A pilot was even shot for a TV series based on the Brad Pitt / Angelina Jolie movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith a couple of years back, but surprisingly, it never got picked up.

The good news is that director James Cameron himself is actually involved in this TV adaptation; he’ll be executive producing through his production company Lightstorm Entertainment along with Rae Sanchini and Jon Landau. Rene Echevarria (The 4400, Castle) will be the head writer and showrunner. Echevarria was also a writer and producer on Cameron’s only other foray into television, the relatively short-lived sci-fi series Dark Angel.

It’s unclear if the show would simply recast the same characters and follow an identical premise, or if it would significantly alter the formula. With the right cast, it could probably be pretty cool… but does this mean a movie sequel is now out of the question? What do you think, are you interested in True Lies: The Series?

If they’re going to be using the same characters getting Tom Arnold is a must.

This is way too late to the game.
