Unbreakable Sequel Idea to Be Used for Third Night Chronicles Film

We’ve been hearing about the possibility of a sequel to M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable for years now, even though he has never seemed like a guy who would be particularly interested in going back to revisit his previous work. Bruce Willis has also said he would be game, but somehow Shyamalan always seems to be moving forward with some other crazy new idea instead — which is unfortunate because right about now this is precisely the kind of thing that could help restore people’s faith in his work. Well, this week the director revealed that Unbreakable 2 is finally about to become a reality, but it’s not quite in the way that we were expecting. Shyamalan is supposedly re-using the idea for a totally separate movie that he won’t direct, and it will make up the next installment in his Night Chronicles series.

Speaking with MTV, Shyamalan explained that he couldn’t resist turning the premise for Unbreakable 2 into a movie of its own:

“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to Unbreakable for one of the Night Chronicles… It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for Unbreakable, and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.'”

This means it would be the third in a series of movies that Shyamalan is acting as producer on, while allowing another writer and director to shape it as their own. The first such movie, Devil, hits theatres this month, while the second, Twelve Strangers, is rumoured to be the next project for The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm.

So does this mean that an official Unbreakable sequel is off the table? Not necessarily. Shyamalan also said that Unbreakable is a particular favourite of his (along with The Village), and that he will simply need to come up with a new idea for a continuation. I guess it’s a bit disappointing to think that he’s throwing away an opportunity to direct another great movie of his own, but it could still turn out to be something cool. Are you still interested in seeing a sequel to Unbreakable and would you prefer to see Shyamalan direct it himself?

i loved Unbreakable and a lot of that had to do with the pacing and direction, that i think only M Night can pull off. i’d love to see him come back as director but him helming the project is good enough for me. it’s better than not getting a sequel at all.

Lets hope these “Night Chronicle” films don’t reach to number 3.

Captain N, you haven’t even seen the first one.

  • Awesome, it’s a way to prove that M.Night doesn’t loose all his talent of film maker. Sam will return too?

Unbreakable is possibly his best movie. But I don’t think it can work as a sequel. The whole movie’s premise is essentially a superhero origins story: What if you were Superman? And how would you know?

The original film was set-up very well and had a great (almost cliched now) twist ending. What’s the plot of #2? Bruce Willis finally dons a fruity latex suit?
