ScarJo and JoGo Levitt to Play Zombies for Diablo Cody?

Last year we heard that Diablo Cody would be starting to expand her career from merely writing movies to producing them as well, and although she is listed as executive producer on both Jennifer’s Body and her Showtime series United States of Tara, one of the first projects she will be overseeing without writing it herself is an adaptation of the book Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament. Written by S.G. Browne, it is a dark comedy about a guy named Andy who dies in a car crash but comes back to life as a zombie. Although initially bummed out about this change in lifestyle, he eventually falls in love with another zombie named Rita after meeting her at an Undead Anonymous meeting. Although we hadn’t heard anything about this project in a while, it is apparently still in development, and now two pretty intriguing names just might end up starring in it.

According to Pajiba, the project is still set up at Fox Searchlight, and both Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Scarlett Johansson are “loosely attached” to play the lead roles. The script has been completed by Geoff Latulippe (Going the Distance), and they are currently in search of a director.

A project like this doesn’t sound out of the realm of possibility for Levitt, who still tends to take on a lot of quirky indie stuff, but you’d certainly think that Scarlett Johannson would have better things to do than to play a zombie. Then again, Natalie Portman is still supposedly starring in Pride and Predjudice and Zombies, and it seems like A-list actors want to be in genre movies just as much as they want to be in comic book movies as of late. After the success of Zombieland, I think just about anyone would be open the possibility. Is this potential casting news enough to get you interested in this movie? Who would you like to see direct?

  • Napalm

the cast has me interested, but based on the plot i can totally see how they can Diablo Codify this movie.

  • Kyriacos

    ScarJo is doable..

  • Bloviator

    Comment on Scarlet’s lips.

  • Gil

I’ll DO ScarJo, if that’s what you mean.

  • Eric

JoGo-Levitt? Seriously? These cutesy names make want to vomit.

  • Sounds good to me. Honestly, I don’t love Scarlett Johansson as an actress and Joseph-Gordon Levitt is getting a little over-exposed, but I like the concept. The story sounds more along the lines of a Fido than a Zombieland and that makes the casting even better.
